The Wikipedia article on "Powder Her Face" says that the Opera was banned by Classic FM for being too raunchy. Did this make any difference to their schedule? Did anyone notice the ban?

Good question, DryBob! I don't think I've ever heard a note of Ades on Classic FM and I can't imagine it would have been their number one priority to play any of his music. Mind you, it hasn't done badly for itself at all without CFM's support, as it got a broadcast somewhat more mainstream than that - a showing on Channel 4 TV, on Christmas Day in the prime-time slot  (a very odd choice, if you ask me, but bold of Channel 4 and I wish they still did that sort of thing!) Off to the Linbury tomorrow - anybody else going? |

Off to the Linbury tomorrow - anybody else going? I've got tickets to next Sunday's performance, standing (Prom's warm-up). I've never been to the Linbury before and I've never seen any Ades opera, so I am doubly excited at the prospect (excited smiley). |

Did anyone notice the ban?
Apparently the evidence for it wouldn't stand up in Court. It's a super piece, I'm sure you'll be blown away by it. |

All this prurient sniggering is very English I must say.   And what a fine job Mr Ades and his librettist have done at portraying that nation's ennobled gentry  I can't imagine where they got the idea from....  Perhaps someone should write CARRY ON COLORATURA? Gentlemen, the field is yours... |

When we lived in the USA for a few years I got to collecting old National Geographic magazines, for car ads, Coca-Cola ads and gramophone ads (yeah, sorry I did cut out the colourful ads and didn't read about Geography, but at 4 for a dollar they were clearly not valuable). Of course my missus told everyone I was cutting out pictures of naked native women from the Amazon John W |
