The other place hasn't shed a huge amount light on this, I wonder if anyone here can.

At present I have the Archipel issue of this musically fantastic recording. At times the sound is very poor (e.g. extremely tinny in the opening or Rheingold).

However, apparently there is a newer issue from Opera D'or:

I wonder if anyone has heard both and can comment on any improvements, as I would like a better one. Is the new Opera D'or issue from the radio master tapes as the Orfeo 1956 Kna ring is? And if not, why on earth have we not had such an issue?

The Opera D'Oro Ring has been out for nearly two years.

I bought it for a ridiculously low bargain price when it was new....I can't claim to have heard any of the previous incarnations of this Ring, but the D'Oro set claims to be 'digitally remastered': however, no further details are given.

I can only say it sounds fine to my ears: there's nothing distracting about the sound, although it's not as much of an 'audio' experience as Keilberth's stereo version (of course).  It certainly sounds A LOT better than the wretched-sounding Furtwangler Ring from La Scala.

The Furtwangler/Scala sound is pretty wretched isn't it (and the audience none to quite either).

I must say, though, that I think the Keilberth/Testament sound has been overrated.

It has. As has the performance.
