This time with the Indy cherrypicking its way around "not covering classical music" to cover celebrity bust-ups instead Sad

Ihrem Ende eilen sie zu,
die so stark in Bestehen sich wähnen.
Fast schäm' ich mich,
mit ihnen zu schaffen;
zur leckenden Lohe
mich wieder zu wandeln,
spür' ich lockende Lust:
sie aufzuzehren,
die einst mich gezähmt,
statt mit den Blinden
blöd zu vergehn,
und wären es göttlichste Götter!
Nicht dumm dünkte mich das!
Bedenken will ich's:
wer weiss, was ich tu'!

(Das Rheingold, Scene 4)

Translation:

They hasten to their end,
though they think themselves strong and enduring.
I am almost aschamed
to share their doings;
my fancy lures me
to transform myself
back into flickering flames.
To burn them
who once tamed me,
rather than foolishly end
with the blind,
even though they be the most godlike gods,
does not seem stupid to me.
I'll think it over:
who knows what I will do?

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Peace has broken out:

For what it's worth I think it's a shame things have worked out like this. I would have much preferred Nike W to take over. She's much more thoughtful and imaginative than the heiresses apparent, and has been curating this festival in Weimar. Of course there's no real need for it to be kept going as a family business, and come to that there's no real need to keep it going at all. Is there?

Good question.  No justification for the family business - a properly-managed trust would be the ideal solution.  I suppose the main justification for the festival is that the theatre is unique, but it would be nice to see the festival develop into something more democratic and scholarly.

Quote
Katharina was given her debut at the festival and promptly turned out a somewhat controversial version of Wagner's celebrated “Meistersinger von Nuremberg” which featured singers equipped with strap-on penises.

So 1980's University College Opera ...

So 1980's.

Eek. I've just learnt from another thread where I asked about possessives, that the apostrophe in that usage is worse than calling the lavatory a toilet.

1980s or '80s.  There is no missing letter for the apostrophe to represent.
