Amongst the highlights of the new ENO season now available for booking into July 2009 is a new production of Peter Grimes, directed by David Alden. The cast features Stuart Skelton, Amanda Roocroft, Gerald Finley and Felicity Palmer. I shall certainly be trying to get there. Anyone else?

That's a fine cast alright IGI.  It's a bit of a long way off but I'm definitely putting the dates in my diary.  11 May looks favourite at first glance as I have to be down south for my concert society's monthly gig on the 12th.  Thanks for the info.

I haven't got as far as checking dates, but yes, I shall go to a performance if I can.

I harbour doubts over the casting of Roocroft: the only time I've seen her live (as Jennifer in the ROH 2005 Midsummer Marriage) she displayed no sign whatsoever that she was strong enough vocally or dramatically to carry the role of Ellen, let alone against someone as dynamic as the virtually heldentenor Skelton.

Hope I'm wrong....

Thank you, IGI.        Peter Grimes  -   ENO    -   May 2009:

Richard II,  Act III, Sc III

Richard      "Set on towards London: - cousin, is it so?"

Bolingbroke     "Yea, my good lord."

Richard      "Then I must not say no."

                     Flourish.         Exeunt.

I've plumped for Saturday 16th May, a 6pm start. I hope other members may be there for a possible meet-up.

That looks like a good date for me too, IGI. Presumably the early start time signals a long supper interval? Good meet-up opportunity indeed - in fact we could try booking a r3ok table at Pizza Express some nice eatery nearby.  Tongue

ENO are rather good at putting on Saturday performances at a slightly earlier time so those of us from outside London stand a chance of returning at a reasonable hour.

There is a very good Spaghetti House right next door to the Coli, well, with only MDC in between...but they do pizza as well, martle!  Wink  Tongue

I know that place, Iggers, and it will do nicely. Is it bookable? I can eat pasta too, if push comes to shove.
