I have tickets for the BBC SO concert in the Barbican on 17th March. I bought them when the soloists were listed as Susan Graham and Thomas Hampson. I confess that it was SG that attracted me the more (sorry operacat!) though I'm a great admirer of TH as well.
When I booked the programme was TBA. I was therefore taking a bit of a risk, but was hoping for maybe the Chausson Poeme from SG. The BBC SO presence suggested to me that this would not be an RPO lite crowd-pleaser.
I've just checked the Barbican website, and what a disappointment! In the first place, Hampson has been replaced by Bryn Terfel. Now, I admire BT, but the chances of hearing Hampson are fewer in this country.
More to the point, the programme is a mishmash of arias interspersed with popular overtures, if anything more lightweight than Renee Fleming's outing at the Barbican last autumn.

I'm thinking of trading in my tickets. Angry

Well, you can imagine how disappointed I am - I bought my tickets literally a year ago!! CryBut - nearly everyone I know is going, so I will go too - after all, it is Bryn Terfel, not some understudy who is grateful for the work! He's on the same level of excellence as Hampson - just not as sexy! Wink
If you are going, maybe you'd like to meet up, if we can devise some way of identifying each other. Unfortunately, I'm not nearly as beautiful IRL as the lovely kitten in my profile!!

Thanks for giving that link Ulrica. I really like the look of the programme - so much so I just bought a ticket! I especially can't resist the chance to hear Susan Graham sing der Komponist's aria.

Catalys
You're right of course: Susan Graham singing the composer's aria is worth the price of the ticket on its own; and the Berlioz is a tempting prospect too. Perhaps I was being too harsh.

For anyone that doesn't know, it's now Sarah Connolly singing with Bryn Terfel, instead of Susan Graham. Who knows what the future holds though?

Many excellent young and unknown performers have become famous because they had to stand in for an ill artist. I was a witness of this phenomenon once.

Well, she didn't sing va tacito, or any Handel...she sang some Mozart arias, and a beautiful scena from Berlioz' La Damnation de Faust.

Well yes, but my point is of course thatn neither Bryn Terfel nor Sarah Connolly is a 'young and unknown' performer!!! Kiss

I know, but I was referring to "some understudy". Wink

I'm afraid I took the view that if the concert had been advertised with Terfel and Connolly instead of Hampson and, in particular, Graham, I wouldn't have gone. So I took the refund which the Barbican, to its credit, offered without demur. No reflection on either BT or SC, both of whom I admire. But concerts like this aren't generally my thing, and I really only made the exception because I'll take any opportunity to hear Susan Graham.

I enjoyed that concert, despite a bizarre programme which appeared to have been thrown together randomly. Beautiful singing from both of them.

It's due to be broadcast on Performance on 3 this evening.
