I was looking forward to hearing Prokofiev's Seven they are Seven on Friday 30th March. Since it's brief, difficult and calls for large forces, it's rarely performed. This performance was really disappointing, being badly balanced with much invisible detail and with strange tempi (mostly too rushed), at least according to the score I have. The old Rozhdesvensky recording from 1970 suffers from the same problems - which I suppose all boils down to lack of preparation. There was a broadcast in c. 1965 featuring Ronald Dowd of which I still possess an almost unlistenable recording but which gives much more of a flavour of the piece.
Is anybody familiar with this piece ? Or have any views from last Friday's performance ? Anybody hear it live ?  There's a recorded Ashkenazy version which I've not heard - anybody know it ?

I hadn't heard the peice before and I thought it was very atmospheric, spooky and scary.

The was something disturbing and unsettling about it which really made it stand out in my opinion.
