Just in case anyone has anything to say about it. Don't know the Gliere, so will be interested.

After a lacklustre first night, "drop out" problems with the Berio, controversy surrounding the Hayden and rehearsal time, lots of criticism of the Bruckner on TOP, I thought tonight's concert went nicely. No, really, I enjoyed it, especially the Gliere after what I thought was a slow start (I'd never heard it before). The audience certainly loved it. Some very colourful moments, even if the nature sounds got a bit wearisome. (If symphonies are going to be that long, I'd still prefer Mahler, or even Bruckner.)

I've always found it one of those works that never lives up to expectations. The advertising blurb for the first recording of it I heard - the Faberman - somehow suggested the sort of symphony that would suit me down to the ground: sadly, on audition, I found it deadly boring. Since tonight was Sinaisky and the BBCPhil, who have scarcely put a foot wrong with their Shostakovich symphonies over the years, I tuned in when I had a moment, to see if they could convince me further. It's still not the marvel that my imagination expects, but I stayed with it quite happily until the conclusion, and know it's there to listen to again whenever I want in the future. Sound and performance rather more secure than the last couple of broadcasts, thankfully.

Last night was the most gripping Prom yet, I would say. Literally - at the end of the first movement I "woke up" and my fingers were gripping the rail so hard I got cramp!
