I have heard only one other work of his and liked it very much.

In fact it was that, and his conducting  on that occasion, which made me reassess my previous poor opinion of this fellow. I now think he is OK. I will be listening tonight.

I hope he will knock spots off the Weir/Bingham school of bland which seems to rule Radio3 these days.

Well it wasn't bland, but it seemed to suffer from the same problem as the other new works featured in this season's Proms - too much going on at once. Maybe it's my set up but I could see instruments playing lots of notes - including a celeste for which the multitude of notes on the score could be seen, and a xylophone - but I couldn't hear them. Even then, the piece seemed to be too busy, even though its energy was at times infectious.

Still, it's always nice to see the contrabass clarinet - he's certainly having a busy season - and they show it much more, including its arrival tonight! They must have been reading my posts.

"Too many notes," as someone said during the interval. Where have I heard that before?

I've commented in Another Place.

I agree it sounded over-scored, which is an odd  thing for an experienced conductor to do.
