Ah, well I'll be all in black again.  I should have a good chance of getting my favourite spot about 3 rows back in front of the fountain....

See you there!

Hurrah!  Deadline met in the nick of time.  Now off to join the season ticket queue at the Hall - hope to see some of you there.

Damn it! I forgot about the early start time. Only tuned in at 19:27. I do hope someone kind is recording it and can help me out. I knew I should have left the scheduler set for 18:58 for all the Proms, and simply edit out the first half hour when not required. Damn! Damn! Damn!

Ah, I see from the Radio TImes that it is being repeated on the afternoon of September 3rd. Must remember to set up to record that from the Sky box (DAB will quite likelybe at 160kbps due to sport on R5LSX).

I'm still very much hoping someone can help though.

Failing the which, Bryn, the Dough Archive would appear to have managed for you...

Trying to track down that Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, Ron. I know I have it somewhere.

Oh, very much so, thanks, Ron. I have already backed it up. Just in case. A considerable improvement on my LP of it, which crams a whole ballet on to each side.

Evening all!

Just got back home from tonight's prom, my last of the season. There are a few carping noises at the other place, but I was very impressed. This wasn't the boring, bland Bruckner a few had predicted - Haitink kept it flowing and, like Abbado the other night, balanced his forces superbly. The brass never swamped the orchestra, but produced a glorious sound nonetheless. Lovely warm string sound too, but I was particularly taken with the woodwind playing, especially the first flute and oboe. I don't think I've ever noticed the woodwind writing so much in a Bruckner symphony, the glory usually going to the brass. The Adagio was just sublime, thoroughly enjoyed here, despite the best efforts of the woman behind me to unwrap a sweet as painfully slowly as possible... I resorted to the Paddington stare, I'm afraid. Was the sound of an alarm of some sorts heard in this movement on the radio? There appeared to be something going off outside the hall and I could see a few puzzled faces amongst the audience. I thought the finale well paced, with an exciting coda. Quite a week, really!  Smiley

With the possible exception of Tuesday, what a week it's been at the Proms!  Haitink still cuts it.

IGI,

Where were you?  From row three of the arena, the alarm (which was only audible when the band were dead quiet) sounded like air conditioning gone wrong.  But I do agree - if you listened carefully enough, you could hear it was one of those modern alarms, presumably some place outside the hall.

I agree with everything you said.  A fabbo concert.  The only bit I could possibly be picky about was that the first half of the first movement seemed a little too disjointed.  But I was just blown away by how visceral and committed the playing was, particularly from the inner strings.  It was just such a physical performance.

Tinners bumped into me and eru afterwards, and he mentioned that he wasn't convinced by the last movement (as a work, not as that performance).  Could you elucidate, time?

I grew up on the other edition (Haas?), so hearing this nowak one was new for me, and I liked it a lot!

Hi Tommo,

I was in the Stalls, directly behind the prommers, so was disturbed by the latecomers the stewards let into the hall a minute before the first movement ended....grrrrrr!

I'm more used to the Haas edition, but Jochum recorded the Novak edition, I think, in both his Dresden and Berlin recordings. I think Haitink has used the Haas previously - I wonder why the change? I remember him conducting the 8th with the VPO at the RFH - must have been at least ten years ago now. It was the first time I'd heard the VPO live and was amazed by the sound!
