I wanted to start a Prom thread.

Sadly work will stop me from getting to the RAH.

Even so I am extremely excited about this concert.

Abbado Mahler just a shade disappointing ?  We are often in danger of building
up a concert to excess.

I really hope this one delivers !

Me too, Ali, and Saturday's (which is on BBC2) looks interesting too, although I'm not sure about the Debussy orchestrations.

As for tonight's Mahler 3, it's one of my least favourite Mahler's so I find it difficult to judge. It sounded very well, at least.

I've seen a few fragments, but I don't like to watch concerts on TV.

It's simply that I haven't heard those orchestrations before and of those I have heard I prefer the original. (Ravel I find a different matter. But then as someone said on these boards we should be wary of lumping those two together.) Perhaps I am thinking of orchestral versions of Claire de Lune which sound like the sort of thing you would hear in a shopping mall or a lift. But life is full of pleasant surprises so I'll certainly give this a try.

I've just looked up Rudolf Escher and I see was Dutch! (Fairly obvious, I suppose, with a name like that but he could have had parents who had emigrated to America or something.)

This is the one, as far as I'm concerned. I've never managed to hear Bruckner 8 live before, so to have it from these artists should be a wonderful experience.

I do feel a bit short-changed to be getting only the Bruckner, though; I would have liked something to warm up my ears first... nothing too substantial - maybe the Rosamunde overture, or Liszt's Orpheus?

...As for tonight's Mahler 3, it's one of my least favourite Mahler's so I find it difficult to judge...

In my teens and twenties I was a great Mahler fan, but having reached middle age I much prefer Bruckner to Mahler. Nonetheless, I do retain a soft spot for Mahler 3. I wonder which of the Mahler symphonies, if any, is generally the Brucknerites' favourite?

...I've never warmed to Haitink as a Bruckner conductor (despite seeing him live on a few occasions, including a Ninth at the Proms years ago). Nevertheless I'll probably tune in.

Really? I find his recordings of numbers 3 and 8 with the VPO riveting...

I'll have to track down that van Beinum recording - I've heard lots of good things about it. Yet another to add to the 10 (I think) on the shelf. I do sometimes wonder if this is consumerism gawn maaaad...   Smiley

<edit>
Ah, you obviously like it brisk: van Beinum 72:28, Barbirolli 73:58

Karajan/VPO (still my favourite...) 82:49, Haitink/VPO 83:16!

I've always found Rudolf Escher's orchestrations of Debussy very elegant. Escher was heavily influenced by the French way of composing, I think his own works are beautiful.  Smiley

Hopefully the weather down there is better than yesterday; everybody up here can't wait to tell me how glorious it was while I was away. It's still nice now: camera outing this afternoon, I suspect. Happy queueing and a great night, Tommo.

Grainger's orchestrations are stunning, Pim.

Tommo,

Might make your acquaintaince this evening then!  I'll be in the season ticket queue from 6-ish - I've got brown hair and glasses and am wearing a blue top and black trousers.

Hope you're not getting too damp out on the South Steps, there's a bit of drizzle in the air...

Indeed, I hope to be in the season ticket queue BY six, as that's when we're going in Shocked so might see you in the Arena.

Currently still battling a deadline which MUST be met today Sad
