Might as well open the books on this one Smiley

Anybody braving this revolting weather to go to this bright and sunny Prom?  Or is it a "curl up on the sofa with a glass of wine and listen to it on the radio" sort of evening Grin

I'll be there, anyway.  What a contrast it will be to the last few days' concerts.

I am hoping it will serve both as an antidote to the rain and gloom, and as a palate-cleanser in a week of otherwise heavy Romantic/Modern symphonic programming.  (Though I should qualify that by saying that last night's Mahler 3 in no way left me feeling that my palate required cleansing.)

I really wanted to go, but some stuff at home has recently taken precedence.  I'll have to content myself with Radio 3 tonight and BBC1 whenever it's shown there.

Hope you enjoy it.

What was the first item tonight? The announcer said it was a concerto for two choirs, then afterwards she said it was a concerto for two choirs of instruments, and in the prospectus it says it's a concerto for two horns.  Huh

Is there a Handel concerto for two horns? Or did someone mistranslate cori as horns for the prospectus? It is a confusing title. I wonder whether he wrote a concerto for two orchestras of singers?  Undecided

Didn't hear the Mackerras performance (must dig out the old Pro Arte Orchestra LP from the loft some day), but in terms of sheer glorious noise the first movement sounded pretty wonderful to me; I thought it tailed off a bit after that.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

I listened in the campervan overlooking Perranporth beach, with a beautiful sunset.
Perfick !

Thought the soprano was a bit of a weak- spot, and some tempi a wee bit slow, but a good night all-in-all.

Would be GREAT to have a name like Blackadder, wouldn't it? Great trumpet player, have heard him loads with JEG,

Did anyone else watch this on TV tonight? I only caught the end of it. That Happy We song by Handel makes me laugh, perhaps not for the right reasons. And Ian Bostridge was standing in an odd way during it.

Didn't even know it was on, Tony - don't expect to see such things on BBC 1. Bostridge often stands oddly - were you subjected to the range of strange faces, too?

It caught me out too, which is why I only caught the end of it. Given that the cameras were there, then, I don't know why they didn't show it live on BBC4 too.

I haven't seen Bostridge perform before and, yes, there were funny faces. I thought if that's what he looks like when he's happy...

  # 15.        Precisely, Tony.     "And Ian Bostridge was standing in an odd way during it."        I was convinced by his stance and expression that he'd given the laundry a real problem!
