At tOP, there is a thread about top 3 proms.  Well, no need to make it a competition, so what were your favourites? - as many as you like....

Mahler 3 under Abbado. Let's sincerely hope it will not prove to be his swansong.

Runnicles' Gotterdammerung and Abbado's Mahler 3 - I suspect these may be popular choices  Smiley

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Bruckner 4th, Bruckner 8th and a special  mention for

Frankfurt/Jarvi in Weber, Mahler and Brahms/Schoenberg.

Missed Leipzig/Chailly and suspect that would have been very much
to taste.

I have enjoyed what I heard of this season more than any other in the recent past - just a personal view.
For me the highlights were the superb Macbeth conducted by Jurowski, the Simon Bolivar Orchestra and the Abbado Mahler, but there were so many that I enjoyed and unfortunately others that I missed or only heard part of.  Thank you BBC and Mr Kenyon for putting it together so well.

I think I'd agree entirely with that selection, gradus! I was at the Hall for the Macbeth and the Mahler 3 and, thanks to the television relay, felt as if I was there for the Simon Bolivar, such was the very special atmosphere. I'd add an honourable mention for Haitink's Bruckner 8... Smiley

Runnicles’s ‘Götterdämmerung’: highlight both of this season and of the Proms ‘Ring’

‘The Apostles’ : probably not the second-best Prom but second best of the ones I saw live.

Honegger ‘Liturgique’ with Jansons.  In a fantasy Prom I’d have Robertson’s vibrant Beethoven 7 in the second half rather than Jansons’s rather ordinary Beethoven 9 that was there in reality.  Then if we could have it followed by the Sibelius & Bartok encores Jansons did the night before…. I can, of course, create such a programme through the magic of minidisc.  I might yet do it!

Levine’s ‘La Damnation de Faust’:  I enjoyed this immensely via the radio.  Sparkling performance by Yvonne Naef.  No thread on this yet – we’re obviously missing Tony!

Special mentions:

Brass Day, especially the ‘Sinfonietta’ with Mackerras – wish I’d been there.

Gennadi Rozhdestvensky coming in as a last-minute substitute and conducting an unchanged programme.

Yes! I'm so glad I was at this concert - I'm surprised it didn't cause more of a stir on here.
