Following last year's Mozart- and Shostakovich-fests, I was looking forward to a real Elgar presence this year. But no. Cello Concerto, Apostles, The Spirit of England, Enigma variations, (all I can remember off-hand), yes, but I think i'm right in saying there isn't even a mention of the symphonies...

The Music Makers?
Dream of Gerontius?
Sea Pictures?
Chamber Music?

and on top of this the poor guy's got to put up with being taken off the £20 note

That's right - no symphonies, no Violin Concerto, no run out for the other P&C Marches. Surely Falstaff, with the Proms having a Shakespeare theme, would have been pencilled in very early on?

Here's what is appearing and when:

Apostles Prom 46
Concerto for Cello in E minor Prom 1
Enigma Variations Prom 31
Four Choral Songs, Op.53 Prom 30
Give Unto the Lord (Psalm 29), Op.74 Prom 30
Organ Sonata in G major – finale Prom 30
Pleading; Speak Music! PCM 1
Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 in D major Prom 72
Serenade for Strings PSM 2
Severn Suite Prom 20
Spirit of England Prom 72
Violin Sonata in E minor, Op.82 PCM 2

Good subject for a thread, eruanto: which lesser-known piece by Elgar do you like?

My choice:

Dream Children

i always liked the piano quintet a lot. i think it has echoes of rachmaninov sometimes in its autumnal sadness.

according to this the lack of elgar (and other anniversary composers) is due to NK's admission at the press launch that "Mozart and Shostakovich were perhaps over-represented in 2006."

The RPS is doing a brill Elgar symposium on May 10th @RCM. For whatever reason, the Philharmonia seems to have got the gig and they are Elgaring up and down the country for the next 2 months, with A. Davis
so should be 1st rate. Perhaps the thinking was to follow up the traddy stuff the PO are doing with the slightly less familiar?

Some of the themes at the Proms have dominated too much, I think. The worst for me was the Spanish one a few years ago. As well as having less Elgar than might be expected, I think they have gone easy on the Shakespeare. In the booklet they say that there is so much 19th century music they could have included. My only gripe (being an advocate for his music) is that they could have included any (or all!) of Sullivan's music for The Tempest, The Merchant of Venice or Macbeth.

No, not just you! I love it to play, and to listen to.
