A very early topic, I grant you, but I just received a Facebook message:

We regret to inform you that, due to ill health, Vernon Handley has had to withdraw from conducting the BBC Concert Orchestra on Saturday 19 July. However, we are delighted to announce that Paul Daniel has agreed to take his place and that the programme and other artists remain unchanged.

That's most unfortunate.

It's unfortunate, but also worrying. July 19th is nearly three weeks hence - so he must be pretty poorly.

Seems Vernon Handley has been ill for some time, this notice is dated 13 May (or before):

Ah, it was only sent to the people on the event guest list, not the whole Proms group. Smiley

I realised in teh end that must be it, can't quite remember why I hadn't put that down as one to attend in the first place.

Am I first home?  And I've been down the Nines!

Anyway.

I tend not to write down band names in my diary, so it was a bit of a shock to see the BBCCO.  But the sound when they played was much better than expected - not the fullest in tuttis, but still good.  And things improved after the Bax - I got the impression that the band appreciated the Finzi and Elgar a lot more.

So, the Bax was pleasant but not memorable.  Some nice first horn work half way through I recall.

All sorts of things happened in the Finzi.  The pre-prom talk was useful here.  I'd expected a musical talk, but instead it was largely about romantic poetry.  Still, it gave background on both the time scales for the composition of the poem and the setting.  Knowing that Bax was working on it over 25-odd years, it was fun to try and catch the influences.  So, in the third stanza I caught two bits of Belshazzar's feast, the summit of the Alpinesinfonie and 'meet the Flintstones' (some kind of PDQ Bach reverse plagarism going on there!).  Lots of interesting orchestration points too.  Some examples - Was the first horn meant to be open and second stopped, or was the first using a stopping valve and not matching the tone enough?  Every time I thought I heard solo violin I looked up and saw the entire section playing.  Does that mean I was not noticing a tutti octave support, or is it possible the leader was being picked up in the vocal mikes?  And on hearing a tuba fanfare I looked up in time to catch a bass passage in the 2nd trombone moving from Ab to G.  (You'd probably have to be a trombonist to work out the reason for that one)

So the Elgar...  Too TOP-ish to talk about clothes and mugging.  It didn't distract from the performance, so so what? (apart from the occasional foot stamp, although I recall a conventionally dressed fiddle soloist doing similar last year).  I'll leave it there - I don't know enough about fiddle playing to say how good good was.

Audience report - respectful silence before clapping at end of Bax and Finzi.  Understandable applause at end of Mvt 1, but absolutely none at end of Mvt 2.  Not very much coughing either.  Why so different from prom 1?  I'd have thought that proms neophytes would be drawn by the 'event' nature of Nige playing.  Or perhaps - penny drops - the heathen tag can be pinned firmly on the corporate crowd, who only come after work Monday to Friday.

One last observation - after shaking hands with the leader at the end of the first half, the conductor shook hands with the principal cello - and got his desk partner instead, so had to shake again!  He didn't even shake around the front desks to recover.

Ah, I just beat you, nb, but on the NMC thread instead and I had to make it all the way back to Hampshire!  Cheesy

I thought it was a lovely prom - a real treat to hear Bax and Finzi in the concert hall and I thought the Elgar was splendid. I too was surprised at how good the BBCCO played, having experienced them on less than wonderful form on previous occasions.

I spotted Ruth, David and LadyDHS but was sitting to the left of the stage, just in front of Sean Rabbity's booth.

I laughed at your "Am I first home?" NB Cheesy Maybe people stayed for the late prom. I did the charity collection then went to IC for drinks, and am now on the bus home - the wonders of modern technology!

Will post more anon about the concert - it's tricky doing it on my phone. However I was delighted to find Eruanto immediately behind me in the queue, having acquired a Season Ticket. As Her Ladyship was immediately BEFORE me in the queue, there was a brief meet of sorts...

Well, I didn't leave until 1143 - and they were still on stage then!  More about that on another thread later.

Pretty much agree, NB.  I tend to think NK looks like a prat, talks like a prat and plays like a master - and only the last bit really matters.  I don't know anything technical about fiddle playing either but of the players I've seen only Maxim Vengerov beats Kennedy at seeming to become one with the instrument.  Perhaps it's all a con - but, if so, it's got me well and truly kidded.

And things improved after the Bax - I got the impression that the band appreciated the Finzi and Elgar a lot more.

So, the Bax was pleasant but not memorable.  Some nice first horn work half way through I recall.

I heard the Bax piece conducted by V Handley in January and Ive listened to recordings of it since.  I don't think it's going to grow on me.  As you say, pleasant enough, but not much more.  I think the Finzi could grow on me if I heard it a few more times.  I certainly enjoyed it last night.  I was rather puzzled to see the TV cameras standing idle for the first half of the Prom.  Surely they could have filmed it even if they didnt show it any time soon.

I think you missed a slight but clearly discernable attempt a applause after mvt2, NB.  I'm pretty sure I didn't imagine it.  But, as you say, much better than the ignorant behaviour of the first night.  I tend not to blame 'neophytes' for this kind of thing - it's more likely to be people with all sorts of different levels of experience who think they ought to be the centres of attention as often as possible.  NK's antics did bring out the fact that some people will clap or laugh at pretty much anything - but as long as they're not doing it while the piece is under way I'm not bothered.  Audience behaviour at both of yesterday's Proms was pretty good in my opinion.

Opinions on Prom 3 tonight if I can get to a PC, otherwise when I get home tomorrow

Just a reminder, there is a Proms 2/Proms 3 bijou featurette (i.e. highlights) of Nige, Elgar and NKQ  on BBC2 tonight at 18:45
