That nice Mr. Wright has sent me an email about the Proms and various Composers

"The 2008 Proms will be a particular pleasure for me, since it is my first year as Director and I am looking forward to it enormously. There will be more events than ever: 76 concerts in the Royal Albert Hall, eight at Cadogan Hall and, four Proms in the Park around the UK on the Last Night. Radio 3 listeners can of course hear every concert live on BBC Radio 3, including online via the BBC iPlayer, and on demand up to seven days later.

We have also enriched the Radio 3 offering with a new series entitled Proms Plus, including talks, interviews and discussions, and developed the Proms experience for listeners both on the station and through rich new online content.

Across the summer we have some special festival days encapsulating the vast range of the Proms: a Folk Day, a Stockhausen Day and Bach Day. And the Folk Day (20th) - related to the Vaughan Williams anniversary - will include the first free Prom in the Royal Albert Hall, featuring among other performers, the London S!infonietta. We are also launching a new Sunday afternoon series featuring four organ recitals and a piano recital by Lang Lang.

COMPOSERS 2008 marks the anniversary of four major composers: 50 years since the death of Ralph Vaughan Williams, the centenaries of both Olivier Messiaen and Elliott Carter and the 80th anniversary of Karlheinz Stockhausen, who died last year. Vaughan Williams died in 1958, so we will some focus on that year in which, incidentally, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was founded. Its most famous output was the evocative theme tune to a well-known science fiction drama – and so there will be a Dr Who Prom!"

Rumour has it that David Tennant and Billy Piper will be at the RAH to introduce this Prom.

Well, that's the preview evening over. Now the mayhem can commence.

But firstly, Tommo, regarding last year's Abbado Mahler 3:

How I wish I had rearranged what I needed to do, and joined the end of the queue after all.  Sad  Just a brillliant performance, and very moving even here.  Heaven knows (and a few people here) what an experience it must have been in the hall.

Please remind me at the start of next season what a dunce I was this one.  I won't let it hapen again.

Tommo

Grin

Hope to be at a few meet-ups along the way. Of course people can come and say helloo in the queue (I have shorter hair now than the photos (Roll Eyes)). I'll probably be in the arena seasoners this year, if my current thinking continues; otherwise in the day q. Smiley

Hmm, just had a look at who's on Hear & Now tonight and there's no-one - think I'll give the late evening prom a miss with Nige or Kennedy or whatever he calls himself these day. Having recently revisited his Hendrix CD, which my niece gave me as a present, I can't say I'm knocked out by his non-classical output.

The bottle of rioja may have something to do with it but I'm quite enjoying Kennedy's late night gig, even Jeff Beck. Not jazz of course, more a sort of retro Jean Luc Ponty, It's a Beautiful Day, Flock type of thing.

A very quick edit, cos the "joke blues" he is now performing is toe curlingly embarrassing. If he could just keep his mouth shut and play ! But for all that, a good gig.

I think Kennedy's late night Prom might be the highlight of the season for me. I know it's a bit early for such a sweeping statement, but this really is my kind of music...

...and Jeff Beck too!!!  Shocked

I'm assuming the "edited" BBC2 broadcast next week will be just the Elgar then the full late-night set?

Bit MotR for my taste. But the Hendrix was so much better than what the Kronos do with his stuff.

After hearing that Jeff Beck was on board I just had to put on the Zappa Plays Zappa version of Punky's Whips. Wink
