Any comments?  I was hoping to be there but was unable to get to London in the end.  From what I heard on the radio I don't think I'll be scouring the listings for more performances of Bax's In Memoriam.  Maybe I was expecting too much of Yevgeny Sudbin after the great recital he gave us in April.  His Rachmaninov 1 was certainly played with passion but didn't seem to take wings the way Racmaninov concertos sometimes do.  Maybe he had his mind on other things - what a way to spend your stag night!  Does anyone who was there have any observations?  Evidently YS did better than the previous night's pianist - it seems Lars Vogt only played the last movement of Brahms 2 well because nobody clapped the earlier movements.  I thought the Vaughan Williams 4th Symphony a bit understated but that's just a matter of personal preference. The BBC Philharmonic seemed, as far as one can tell via the radio, to be in good form throughout.

With a bit of luck (actually, in the absence of another dose of desperately bad luck) I should be able to get down for Paul Lewis playing with our very own Cultureville Phil next week.  I'm looking forward to that; and, if I'm feeling adventurous, I might give that Stockhausen another go on the Saturday.  I've never been able to get on with him but I enjoyed some Webern the other week and (apart from Passacaglia and Im Sommerwind) I never thought that would happen; so you never know!

Talk on English music before concert, revolving around poor box-office figures for it. One chap comes out with "I was thrilled that the hall was absolutely packed for Prom 2: Bax, Finzi, and Elgar." Eh? It was Kennedy that was the draw. Silly.

Methought the Bax quite dramatic in places, and I enjoyed it much. YS made the Rach look a bit too easy for my liking, this resulted in a touch of jealousy on my part, I fear. But the highlight was the RVW 4. I've never heard any RVW symphony live, and this was so gripping. The players were working their socks off, and as for Tortelier, well, his near-orgasm before the final chord says it all really.
