I was slightly confused as to the need for the soprano at the start of the Borodin, not very cost-effective?

Not very, but then was Lortie (for 15 minutes of music)?  Wink  I thought it was good to hear some of the lesser-known Borodin before the Polovtsian Dances.

Ruth and I were joking about whether John Tomlinson would feature in the Borodin (there's a brief solo line from Khan Konchak) but we figured he wouldn't want to wait around for another hour or so after his Boris performance. In the end, he came and joined the audience in Row 8 of the Stalls for the final part!

But he had a lot more to do, and also made a lot more fun out of it, than the soprano.

Saw Ruth in the first interval - she had prime spot in the front row of prommers this evening!

Don't know about Ruth, but I was getting what Sir Alex Ferguson would call the "hairdryer treatment" from Sir John, in aline were him, the mic and me, with all of 2m between us.

Some positive reviews of Tevot, even if Adès' conducting doesn't get Seckerson's approval. His savaging of the CBSO Chorus is a little unfounded, I feel:

what dyd you thync ygy? Y was pleasantly surprysed by ades' conductyng-effycyent wyth a byt of flayr.
ys there some strange dryft where yn oscyllatyng composyng and conductyng one role wanes (eg salonen; oetvos etc ). ades sounds to me hyghly savvy commercyally but juvenyle of lyteral-mynded aesthetyc and y thyn thats very unfortunate gyven hys promynence. y half-expected celyne dyon-subject to fanatycal devotyon here n edmontonynyt- to do a cod pastoral byt over the top-same aesthetyc to my ears-meanyngless looc-at-me-tub-thrummyng.

"Efficient with a bit of flair"? Yes, I think that sums it up, mf. I wasn't too convinced over his handling of the Coronation Scene from Boris, where percussion and choral contributions threatened to come off the rails at one point, but I think generally he got very fine performances from the CBSO forces.

It's interesting about the composer/ conductor conundrum. I think that maintaining an active role as a performer/ conductor will add to his qualities as a composer. I always think of Salonen more as a conductor than a composer - I wonder what sort of balance he strikes in juggling the two?

....come to thync of yt y left out boulez the fastydyous ;prevyn; gary howarth (who mysteryously doesnt conduct new worc any more so a colleague of ours here was told) salonen y thnc has tyme off bult ynto several overlalppyng contracts? y agree wyth you yn pryncyple ygy; and y have to say  y myssed the coronatyon scene. the rest of the prog y'd arguably ysnt that dyffycult to conduct and may have been  chosen dyplomatycally for hym so the band -and prep asst cond-could hold yt together where necessary?

Before I went to the concert, I read a Guardian piece Tom Service wrote about Tevot and this part struck a chord with me:

At the end of the run-through - which, even with its moments of technical imperfection, has revealed the shattering, visionary directness of the new piece - Rattle invites Adès on to the podium to talk to the orchestra. As Adès tells me later: "Simon knows that I sometimes don't really know what's the right thing to say. And to tell the truth, I was quite overcome by the whole thing, so I probably didn't make much sense, so Simon shouted in my ear: 'You have to say, thank you!'"

On Saturday, I was surprised that, at the applause that followed the Boris excerpts, Adès didn't once bring either the orchestra or the chorus to their feet. Does he seem a little naïve/ gauche or just a bit uncomfortable on the platform?
