Berio's Calmo Ooh, ooh! I'd no idea that was still available (being a piece Berio deleted from his catalogue, although I wore the record thin at college). Yay. He deleted it? We played it last year, I'm fairly sure. Dodgy conductor. And the singer wasn't much chop. But one of the cellists was... well, it's nice if a life has a few such lovely people in it.

Textures and balance, good, Ali: some wonderful playing. I'll bet it was stunning in the hall, but all that suspended animation just broke the back of it for me: it dragged. The end really doesn't work if there's no real contrast to what's gone before. I had toyed with making the trip down when it was first announced, but decided on the strength of his first recording that I'd probably be disappointed. I was.

The end really doesn't work if there's no real contrast to what's gone before Hear hear. Playing was great, but it did drag a lot in the hall, particularly the end of the first movement. I'm afraid there were at least two moments where I 'woke up' and thought gosh, are we only here?! I thought the Mahler was far better, personally.

I did notice that. Haitink did tend to make the music sound rather spacious. Looking back, to what i remember, probably various timings, than ks to Ron Dough!

If I'm thinking of the right piece (not at all a forgone conclusion), Calmo doesn't have voice(s), Ollie. It's a short orchestral work, very pointillist in style and PP (or less) throughout. And yes (again, IIRC), he withdrew it some years after its publication. EDIT: Scratch all that. I'm thinking of Still.

pp or less throughout, yes, I remember that bit. Pointillist, no, I remember a lot of, well, to be honest, sludge. But hm. I'm seeing voice here. http://www.universaledition.com/truman/en_templates/paste.php3?template=werkinfo&spr=en&werk=1431&komp_uid=54&werkTitel=CalmoMaybe the piece he withdrew isn't the same piece that reappeared in 1989... Edit: ah, have seen your edit. That's a relief...

At the lowest price here, yes. Amongst other goodies: the Maderna Violin Concerto, Berio's Calmo and Chemins IV (Holliger), KK conducting En Saga, the Rococo Variations the Divine Poem with Rostropovich and the Italian Symphony: a van Otterloo Beethoven 4, a Giulini Bruckner 9, a(n) Harnoncourt Haffner, and 'cummins ist der dichter...' by Boulez.... Thank you Ron, that's another £65.84 you've cost me. Quick and helpful service from the French suppliers, I will say.

Cost me a darn sight more than that when it first came out, Bryn, but I've never regretted it: there are some absolute treasures in there in real performances.

Have to make a note on that box then! I think companies ought to give some of their profits to these boards The amount of times that we members mention the details of dvds or cds, etc, and then buy, I think they do jolly well out of us guys here.
