I have FreeSat. On Friday my Sky remote "froze". When I switch on I get on the screen the following:-
116 BBC Four (Tick symbol) 7.08am Fri 24 Oct Now - programmes start at 7.00pm Then under that a symbol for Time, Channel, Messages and Favourites
The 7.08am is a mystery as I never turn the tv on in the morning. Also I have never used the Favourites function.
Whatever I have tried pressing the screen remains "locked" and will not change. I am assuming it is the remote and not the box (which is showing a green light).
Has anyone had this happen to them? Is there some magic sequence of buttons to be pushed to clear it? If I buy a new remote is it just plug and play so to speak or would I have to enter a code for my tv?

Anna, Have you tried taking out the batteries, leaving it for 10 seconds and then putting them back in again? Apart from that, I cannot help...Sorry

Jonathan,
Batteries were my first thought so changed them over but to no avail. It's just refusing to do anything. Perhaps I should turn it off at the wall (like you do with computers?) It's just an annoyance because I have only just got my signal back after having to have surgery on a tree in the garden which was blocking the signal.

Anty, if you turn everything off at the wall socket and leave it for 30 seconds, everything should have reset, including the remote control. It works for me anyway.

Just done that Milly, now I don't even have the frozen page, just a snow storm and a red light on the digibox Guess I'll have to call out the local satellite firm. The handbook isn't much help.

I'm not sure if FreeSat counts as part of Sky, but I have found Sky people very helpful on the phone. They are usually very friendly Scottish people, who, if it's too technical for them to solve, usually pass you over to the technical department. I'd certainly try them before spending money on calling someone out!

Descombes, FreeSat is Sky (one off payment for box and dish) but now I don't even have anything on screen except the snow storm, but I guess I'll give them a call tomorrow. Thanks.

Noooooooooooooo! When you see the red light, just press the Sky button on the remote control and the green one comes back on. Then it resets itself.

If you haven't got any picture, perhaps you can't see the phone number. I've just checked, and the Freesat number is 0870 606 1111. Some of their numbers operate 24 hours! As I said, they are usually delightful Scots, who have a chat about the weather and how amazing Sky+ is, as well as solving problems! Best of luck!

Anty,
Have you removed the FreeSat card from the slot and given the contacts a gentle clean with a dry cloth before reinserting? Also please check that all your connections are tight: the scart plugs and the aerial: the former need to be pushed right home, whilst with the latter you'll need to check that the screw collar is tight, and that the aerial cable is still firmly held in the connector. I've had a glitch with FreeSat over the weekend, too, as it happens, but after breaking and remaking every connection, it all seems fine again.
It's worth remembering that depending on which box you're using, some of the controls may be duplicated on the actual box itself as well as the remote, too, so if they're available, give them a prod, too.

Thanks for that Ron and Descombes. I did go on the Sky help pages and it said to press standby on the box. I then got a page (!) saying I was not connected to the telephone (which I am not) and to press "back up" to return. Upon doing that nothing happened of course.
I will check all connections tomorrow but now am headed on this bright, cold and starry night to bed having had enough of technology for one night.

The telephone is a red herring in the FreeSat case, Anty: if there's anybody else nearby who has any standard Sky or Sky FreeSat, then you should be able to do an R/C swap, to see if your control will work on their box and vice versa. I"d still guess that the problem lies elsewhere, though....

Interesting that you had FreeSat problems at the weekend Ron. I got up early and fiddled around with it before leaving for work, it is now working and I can use the buttons on the box to control it. However the remote is still totally dead. I will buy new batteries today but you are supposed to get a low battery warning on screen aren't you? I wonder if the remote's brain has got scrambled and needs resetting?

I have occasionally had to change my remote's batteries, but I can't remember getting an on-screen message to tell me to. Sometimes I have found that taking out the batteries and putting them back in does the trick.
It does sound as if you have almost solved the situation.
It amazes me how the stock response to Sky box or computer problems in general seems to be to turn everything off and start again. It seems to work most times, too!

Hi Antheil, Those low battery warnings on Sky remotes are notoriously dodgy. The frequency of warnings that you get tends to be directly proportional to the amount of charge left in the batteries, so the chances are if you didn't get a warning they're flat. When you change them it'll probably start screaming "Replace batteries! Replace batteries!!" Sorry to hear you're having problems. My satellite signal is driving me insane at the moment, it keeps going for no apparent reason.
