Hopefully, this may be of interest to some of you.
I've been disappointed for sometime with Windows Mediaplayer on my computers (not great) speakers.
That is until i downloaded the media monkey player.
Not only does it sound so so so much better (more natural in the treble departments, and bass really packs a punch, but is discreet enough at all other times), but it supports all 'lossless' sound files - .ape, .flac etc.
It also can convert any sound file type to any other sound file type ie. .ape to .mp3, so you can stick it on your mp3 player, or burn it to cd etc etc

does it do ogg? i currently use winamp but find it less than friendly to use

i installed a creative xfi audio card and would caution the universe against doing so, repacing it is the top budget priority! their media player is limited as well. but the little zen nano is a treat to use i record meetings etc with it.

i made the change to media monkey on the laptop yesterday. wow am i impressed. installed and working in under 15 minutes, sound on a cheap (£25) speaker system from phillips (2.1) much better than musicmatch, and a smaller application to. downloaded an mp4 plug in that worked first time with no funny business, so all the tracks i had ripped in itunes are now playable by media monkey! (there were a lot of these.
on my laptop i had to put all the music files (at least 50gb, on an external hard disk to save space on the hard drive. media monkey had all the tracks sorted in less than two minutes, web look up of info is fast too. not sure about tag editing yet, too busy just listening! I am truly impressed, but will wait a few weeks before a real thumbs up, living with apps is the real test.

in my searches i came across dbpoweramp, which looks a touch red hot as well. does any one have any experience?

The problem I find with Media Monkey is the gaps between the tracks - I agree that in many ways it is superior to Windows Media Player, both in terms of sound and ease of use (especially to WMP 11, whose operation seems deeply counter-intuitive to me) but for long works subdivided into tracks, WMP has the edge)

i've just queried this in the Mediamonkey forums, and asked if its possible to get rid of this and the 'blip' noise when a track changes.
i'll let you know

Playback
How do I enable crossfading and gapless playback?
You can set crossfading and gapless playback settings via the included DirectSound output plug-in:

Go to Tools | Options | Output plug-ins and set DirectSound as the output plug-in if it isn't already.
Click the 'Configure' button to configure the plugin.
To enable Crossfading, select the 'Fading' tab
Change the default fade length to 600ms (or longer)
Double-click 'On start' and then 'On end of song' to enable fading
Click 'Apply' and then 'OK'
To enable gapless playback:
Select the 'Buffering' tab
Increase the 'Buffer length' to 5000ms
Increase 'Buffer-ahead on track change' to 3000ms
Select the 'Fading' tab
Ensure that fading is disabled for 'on start', 'on first start', and 'on end of song' since if fading is active, gapless playback will be disabled.
Select the 'Other' tab
Check "Remove silence..."
Click 'Apply' and then 'OK'

no gaps at all now!

hmm

i was just listening to Rheingold having followed the instructions above and I was about to come on here and say how useful they were, when

I reached the junction with the last track, and poor Loge got a bit snipped! It was something like

Bedenken will ich's; wer weiss, was ich -

and then the next track butted in. It was only a moment of course, and that was the only time it happened, but still... bit annoying!

eek.... it's doing strange things....

i was playing walton symphony no. 1 (fantastic) and when the monkey of the media made it to the third movement it decided to start it at 28 seconds in. it wouldn't let me start from the beginning of the track!!

how is this to be resolved?  Huh

the monkey is an odd choice of icon-did they not think of say, david mellor?
really useful anti-gap tips, cheers. i find a similar thing happens with radio streams often. i'd like to play streams based on wmp-eg thejazz- through mm, is this possible? puzzling that broadcasters persist in routing through
dodgy wmp with its interminable buffering etc.

Very belated thanks, Tonybob, I've just got round to doing this and it works a treat.
