I currently record directly from my soundcard using a bit of software called WireTap. There are obvious problems with this (you're not recording directly from the stream but your recording is mediated by your soundcard, and also if you make a sound on your computer by mistake this is recorded for all time) and a friend (who uses Linux) recommended that I download MPlayer for Mac.
I'm a complete ignoramus when it comes to using this kind of thing (you have to use the Mac equivalent of Terminal) and the manual assumes a level of knowledge that I don't possess.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this software or can recommend something else?

What exactly are you recording, hh? And where from (source-wise)?

Well, a friend of mine records the Radio 3 stream from their website and assured me that he can also do it for Listen Again (which is what I'd like to do really).
Unfortunately he's a fully paid up Linux chap and so his help with my poor grasp of what you can and can't do with a Mac was a little limited.

hh,
Possibly a silly question, but why is recording the LA stream your goal, when the quality is so appalling? Since you are a fellow Mac user there is a much more elegant solution: one of the Elgato systems; I've been using the satellite-based one for a few months now, and it's brilliant; the timer can be programmed for up to sixteen events at a time, and because the stream is recorded at the same standard as the satellite rate coming in I'm able to back up over 40 hour's worth of music and drama per DVD. There are Digital Terrestrial Television (FreeView) alternatives at a pretty reasonable price....

That does look rather tempting Ron.
I was going to say something about money, but, for the price of a couple of hours teaching, that's not really an argument here...
Which one do you have?

Why LA? Well, I don't want to commit myself for staying up for the whole time that H&N is on. I also don't like leaving my computer on all night, but I could make an exception... Wink

That's what I splashed out on, hh; worth every penny. The smaller models are also very well regarded too; as long as you get decent freeview reception you'll be well away.

hh, what is DAB reception like where you live? If it is stable (even if you have to use an external aerial), a Pure Bug might be of interest to you. It can save up to about 23 hours of Radio 3 on a 2GB SD card, and has a programmable timer. It looks pretty strange, but I find it works pretty well, and you don't need to leave your PC on to use it. It saves the files in raw mp2 format, which you can edit on a PC using something like mp3DirectCut. I presume Mac users can advise on suitable software for doing the same sort of job on such a computer. I got my Bug just before Xmas. It's a refurbished one, bought via Amazon UK for about £60 including delivery.

All your suggestions look great. My girlfriend will, however, have my guts if I start spending money on anything other than necessities. Looks like I'll have to make do with what I've already got (which isn't awful).
