What would anyone recommend in the way of sound-editing software (preferably downloadable for free and Windows Vista compatible)? I would just like to be able to extract sections from sound files, maybe even try editing sections together by cross-fading.

Sorry Ian, I have no idea what is, and what sin't fully Vista compatible. At least with Audacity, no financial outlay is involved. Goldwave has a good reputation, and version 5.19 claims Vista compatibility, it seems. It's not freeware (costs around $45) but can be downloaded.

I don't know about Vista compatibility, but I use Sound Forge and Cool Edit Pro. I don't know what's available as freeware, but you can message me if you want a copy of either.

Speaking of which, wasn't I supposed to do some editing for you?

I will get back to you about that - it's a matter of recovering masters and rights first Smiley

We have always found Samplitude 7.22 very satisfactory. It can do all sorts of marvellous things, including all those listed by the Member.

free stuff is :
audacity and ardour, although ardour is a pain to either get started, or stop from crashing.
audacity is by far more stable.
