Watched Fitzcarraldo on BBC 4 last night for the first time in about twenty years. Didn't have the stamina to follow up with Aguirre.
It's one of those films with its own mythology, a bit like Touch of Evil by Orson Welles, that seems to transcend the finished article. Certainly a huge cut above the rest of the Saturday eveening tv fare that was on offer.

Strangely, Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre were on BBC4 last night, MJ. That's a wonderful image, certainly gets my vote!
Anty, don't forget Gwyneth Jones and Joan Carlyle (born in Pontnewynydd and Ruthin respectively), or Margaret Price (Blackwood), Della Jones (Neath) and Gwynne Howell ('near Swansea'): all really world-class artists.

Anyone here visited this one? That is magnificent, MJ! We could of course go a tad more modern - The new house in Copenhagen.

Although this is a highly personalised observation, the case of the Manaus Opera House always makes me think of the Opera House in Ulan-Ude, Buryatia (S Siberia). If building an opera-house in the S American jungle was an act of folie-de-grandeur, there is a special vainglorious frisson in building a style-moderne opera house in the southern steppes of Siberia, so that the local population of Mongolian nomads could enjoy the full benefits of soviet society and see performances of SWAN LAKE and LA BOHEME It's still standing, but currently under a major rebuild. Opera's in the doldrums there, but ballet is thriving - the athletic build of the Buryat dancers makes them hotly wanted performers across the rest of the country

Oh bugler! How's that for bad timing! I wonder if we should start an opera houses thread with those posted so far? Or does one already exist? Although this is a highly personalised observation,
Which makes it all the more interesting, Reiner!

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Ron, apart from Aquirre Wrath of God, which I love, I do not forget those other 22 world class Welsh opera singers you do not name!

I have a feeling it should be 23, Anty, for although Anne Evans may have be born in London, she's usually labelled as Welsh, too.

Aha Ron, of course we have not included Bryn Terfel etc for one, so that brings it up to 30 which equals 10% of the Welsh are famous opera singers. Couldn't make it up if you tried, statistics don't lie!! What a truly gifted Nation Even though Adelina Patti adopted Wales.

Well Ron, Adelina Patti , Baroness Cederström, settled in the Swansea valley in South Wales, where she purchased Craig-y-Nos Castle There she had her own private theatre, with the stage built sloping backwards, so that she would always appear taller than those behind her. Look you, Welsh Tenors are notoriously short, she had to take action!!

Fitzcarraldo and Aquirre Wrath of God, all time favourites. I have them on video. I am a Werner Herzog fan
Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre (sic ) are muddled up in my mind as I saw both years ago and haven't seen them since - ought to watch them again I suppose to sort them out. I remember the pulling of the boat over the hill which is from the former. (excluding Catherine Jenkins) Who's she?
