Prompted by Ollie's tips on vinyl shops in Basel:

Quote
Willy Lochmann
Vinyl-Schallplatten der 60er u. 70er Jahre
Allschwilerstr. 40
4055 Basel
Phone 061 301 54 18
Fax 061 301 34 77

Schmocki's Ohrwurm Oase [is that a name, or is that a name?]
Güterstr. 271
4053 Basel
Phone 061 331 10 11

Atlantis Records
Bernhard Rotzinger
Klosterberg 9
4051 Basel
Phone 061 271 23 63
Fax 061 272 54 75

from the Barrett in Basel thread, I thought it might be nice to have a thread for listing our favourite/recommended sources for secondhand vinyl. If they have an international bent that we can slip into the back of our Lonely Planet Guides, then so much the better.

I know of only one place really in London of any range, the Music and Video Exchange in Notting Hill. Good selection, but often hugely overpriced.

Elsewhere, this place in Paris is a gem:

La Dame Blanche
47 rue de la Montagne Sainte Genevičve

Does anyone know if Yarborough House in Bishops Castle (Shropshire ,England)is still there?

I have found some wonderful 1950s LPs in near-mint condition there. I imagined they came from a wealthy country house where they could afford to buy them, play them once ,then buy some more. The the owner dies and his heirs said,'oh its just a load of old records,no-one will want these, send them to a junkshop'.

Yes, still going strong, and still plenty of interesting stock - I was in there on Easter Monday, and picked up an interesting Havergal Brian LP (for a whole Ł2) as well as a BBC CD of Bliss's Meditations on a Theme of John Blow, a lovely work.

I'd go and live there, given half a chance - Bishop's Castle has a population of 1,630 and two breweries  Cheesy

And plenty of stunning countryside in which to work up a thirst!

In the Midlands the best quality classical vinyl is found at Oxfam shops, but a bit pricey, cheapest 1.99, most 2.99 upwards. The one in Coventry the labels have little stickers saying 'collectable' or 'unusual rare' to justify the price.

There's one in Birmingham (Harborne) which sells just books and music currently has only boxed sets in stock, but there 's another one at the other end of the High St which has single LP's from 1.99.

Academy Records on 18th St. between 5th and 6th avenues is my
favored second-hand CD and vinyl store in Manhattan.  A tad pricey (but hey, you're in Manhattan) but lots and lots
to choose from, including a hefty post-WWII section.

I've posted a similar request on M&S, so apologies if it looks like I'm bugging people - but any tips for secondhand shops in Berlin? This seems like the most promising one I've found so far:

Edited on return: I was right! Very nice shop: classical lovers need to squeeze into the back room between a copy of the first Kraftwerk LP (150 euros) and a signed Black Sabbath poster featuring a so-young-you'd-hardly-recognise-him Ozzy Osbourne (not for sale). Came back with lots of East Euro goodies, including an early Péter Eötvös LP that was twice as much as anything else for reasons I know not yet why.

If anyone's near Dorset, the Times is calling this the classical sale of the century: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article3714250.ece

It's always a moment of mixed joy and sorrow when you find someone's extensive, painstakingly-assembled collection in a second hand store (I also frequent used book stores, and have found wonderful collections including someone's entire set of the first year of Penguins). The strongest reason I can think of to procreate, or adopt, and make sure you brainwash the brat into sharing your tastes.

There used to be a superb place on one of the quieter streets in Norwich, but I never used to bother with street names Embarrassed being too busy avoiding things usually.
