Today we went into Coventry, quick look at Xmas sales, I went for HMV 'up to 70% off' only to be astonished that they no longer stock ANY classical CDs so I didn't even bother to look for DVDs.

But, vinylophile that I am, I popped into the nearby Hospice shop and picked up:

EMI. Tosca boxed set (Callas, Di Stephano, Gobbi)
EMI. J Strauss Gypsy Baron 2LP (Schwarzkopf, Gedda)
EMI. J Strauss Wiener Blut 2LP (Schwarzkopf, Gedda)
EMI. R Strauss Four Last Songs LP (A Rothenberger, Previn LSO, nice English/German booklet too)
World. Elisabeth Schumann songs Schumann  (from 1930-1946)

all for £5.

The Callas is re-mastered in the 1960s from 1953 tapes, in mono; the Schwarzkopf are 1960s LPs of late 1950s mono recordings in 'reprocessed stereo'; the Schumann mono, the Rothenberger stereo (1975)

Thank you Santa. Now when will I get to listen to these?

WHAT?! No Classical CDs AT ALL?  Is it a particularly small HMV? My local HMV is pretty small but it does at least have a Classical section, albeit rather limited.

Well done on the vinyl though. I never seem to have any luck with my local charity shops as far as recordings are concerned. Vinyl and CDs are horribly sctratched and cassettes sound very `muddy`. I`ve all but given up.

Mort,

It's quite a large shop, I spent a good ten mins in there, looking at all the racks with their headers, didn't ask. I think the last time I was there it was just compilations and cross-over to be found in their easy-listening section, same again.

Oh well, we have an excellent Borders at the Ricoh Centre, maybe they have a sale though likely just books, will have a look tomorrow (got a footie match there at 5.00pm Sat.)

The vinyl findings are all in excellent nick, looking mint or just one or two playings (looking at the little spindle marks around the centre hole). My wife has gone out again so I've got Gypsy Baron on, not something I've ever paid much attention to and probably only previously heard the odd piece on Radio 2. These LPs are the complete work, with choruses and the spoken parts. Enjoying Schwartzkopf. Music for this time of year  Cheesy

One of my favourite sources of classic recordings for a long time has been CoCoA. The site has undergone a major revamp recently, and I haven't tried downloading anything yet, but it used to be painfully slow. Nevertheless, a small price to pay for public domain recordings in MP3 format.

John W: not quite such a big haul as yours but similarly operetta-ish - my local Oxfam has just coughed up the HMV Plasson Orpheus in the Underground and the Decca Sutherland/Bonynge Tales of Hoffnung, LPs in near-mint condition. I tried to get them for free, 'on prescription' as it were, as a possible antidote to a Christmas present, Birtwistle's Punch & Judy, but they insisted on charging me £4.98 for the lot   Grin

Then round the corner to an animal charity shop: in among huge piles of utter rubbish a well-worn copy of "Great Instrumentalists (1)", Dennis Brain, HQM 1003,for 50p. Bit of a chiz really: it's marked 10p in biro from a previous s/h transaction  Sad

Ah, but that was probably in the days when 10p's were bigger, FMJ! Wink
