Welcome, Ian! You seem to be holding your ground very well in a discussion I've purposely avoided Smiley  Please continue to do so!  Smiley

Reiner:

Looks like you just stopped avoiding it!

Edit: I should add:  Wink

Frankly I would have preferred the term commoditisation in that discussion, CD..  "commodification" seems to imply turning things into a commode  Wink

I am all in favour of a plurality of opinion in discussions on this board.  I think you know what I mean?  Wink

, I do. But your post here says "I have an opinion, but am unwilling or unready to share it; yet I'd like people to know that I have one."

That sounds a little harsh, I'm afraid -- I don't mean to pressure you into anything, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the topic over there, and I fully understand in advance your choice to refrain therefrom.

You're entirely correct.  If it sounds harsh, then the harshness reflects upon the reason I haven't posted there - thank you for recognising what (and who) it is  Wink

I'd like to add that, for all our disagreements in the past, I would be very interested in Reiner's views in the commodification thread - it's possible that I may disagree with them, but if so, hopefully in a cordial spirit, as part of the highly dialectical interchange that is going on there.

And in future I will be very careful indeed before ever using the term "commodo" on a score"...(!)

I find that extremely difficult to believe.

Even more careful than Britten was when he used the term 'obligato', I hope. Wink

Thanks very much for the welcome.

As requested, here is a little bit about myself.

I am a freelance, independent composer. Most of income derives from writing T.V. music (especially cartoons), but most of my time is spent writing ‘concert’ music,
I will generally write something (for no commission) for anyone who asks.
I don’t have to rely on income from this work and therefore can write what I like without worrying whether it will fit in with any current trend or marketable category. As it turns out, unfortunately, I think my music falls neatly between two stools. (R3 and classic fm) Which means it’s hardly heard at all. (although there might be other reasons for that)

There isn’t much music (if any) I really dislike, although, on balance, I prefer tonal/modal music. Most of my own music is tonal/modal but only because the ideas that pop into my head are tonal/modal – no discrimination or political stance is intended.

Nowadays, I find it hard to know if I’m listening to music for personal/pleasure or for ‘professional’ reasons. I hope that some day I might rediscover a more innocent mode of listening.
