I only rejoined because of Liszt.  No.  I joke.  It's Alkan, I need you to guide me on him.  I find him very thrilling, only got Ronald Smith.

You know that Marilyn Monroe film about Rach, she says "it thrills me, it makes me all goose bumpy all over"?  Well that's what Alkan does to me.

Thud.  Sound of bookcase hitting the floor!

Jonathan (she muttered whilst extricating herself from the bookcase.  Oh buglar, that's where me Frank Kafka novel went she sighed and just as her trembling hands reached for the novel. .... Thud!)

Is Alkan considered very old fashioned?

There was an earlier Alkan thread in case you haven't seen it.

Anna, no, not really - he was described as the Berlioz of the piano (by someone) and is generally thought to be progressive.  His Gigue, Op.24 is extrememely odd (and on one of Ronald Smiths CDs, IIRC)

Also you didn't say which RS CD you have - there are actually 3 which I will list on the Alkan thread reflagged by BobbyZ!!

Why do you think the Gigue Op.24 odd?  I got that, Ronald Smith, don't seem odd to me.

Hi Anna, I think it's odd 'cos it's very angular and disjointed and sounds like it should have been written much later than it was!

(Good Bruckner on R3 btw.)

But then Op. 37 sounds angular and disjointed as well doesn't it?  And what's wrong with that?  I thought that was how Alkan was, altthough in the 37 there is a teensy bit of Rach I thought, about 3 seconds worth.

In Le Tambour there is Chopsticks ...

But what do I know she said opening her copy of .............. Thud!

Psst!  We done that joke before.

Sorry!
