I've recently returned from a week of sheer joy in the Scottish Highlands; around and about in Ross & Cromarty. The spectacular setting and glorious autumnal colours easily supplemented my withdrawal from music, newspapers and industrial disputes.
Rather sad to find a state of internecine warfare on these MBs which may yet undo the many qualities usually prevalent here. Time, patience and serious discussion will surely restore the status quo. Give it a try, please.

It is very sad, isn't it, Stanley? It's also quite incomprehensible to some of us, who are used to adults settling their differences amicably..

I'm hoping that what happened over the weekend was just a blip. I certainly think there has been overreaction on a number of sides and I don't think this compares to what happened on the official Radio 3 boards back in February, which led to the establishment of this one. I will look in on the other boards and I wish the Music and Society one well (I've registered there and will probably chip in) but this will remain the main one for me.
I'm going to stick my neck out and say that I think the rot set in when the waffle thread was started on the old R3 boards. It caused a lot of regular posters to spend time and effort posting on it and less so on music matters related to Radio 3. I think it was indirectly responsible for the exasperated feelings over there that the R3 boards were filling up with stuff that had nothing to do with the station. The way the BBC reacted, though, was well out of proportion.
I admit that I've posted waffle here but that was because the spirit and intention of this MB seemed different from the old R3 board. And I agree with others who say that they found the political threads uninteresting or difficult to understand, though there was nothing offensive there.

I think the point of the non-musical threads is that we can "talk" about many things with like-minded people, who are likely to to understand what we say. That's how it seems to me, anyway.

I feel that`s a rather harsh judgement, Tony. No one forced `regular posters` to contribute to the Waffle thread, whether on the Beeb board or here. If they contributed to Waffle then, surely, it was of their own free will.
As Mary pointed out, "I think the point of the non-musical threads is that we can "talk" about many things with like-minded people, who are likely to to understand what we say". These non-musical threads have also demonstrated the ability for this community to be supportive of those of us who, every now and again, get rather swamped by the choppy waters of life. I think that an admirable thing .

The non-musical threads over here are fine - as I said, I've taken part in them myself - because this MB was set up in that way, but the waffle seemed to sit rather uneasily on the old board because it was a significant change of direction. And didn't say that anyone was compelled to contribute, but I thought I noticed a falling off of interesting postings about music on the old R3 board because people were taking the easier option of posting waffle instead. But perhaps I was perceiving it wrongly. It's worked over here because people are more generally like-minded than they were over on TOP; again, because that's how this board started out I think.
My 1,000th posting! Sorry I had to be so defensive in it but I suppose I did stick my neck out.

I think many people have very happy memories of The Waffle Thread, which was sanctioned by the Moderators of R3. I feel it was 'of the moment' and just cannot be repeated anywhere else. The film scripts were unique. But as Morticia points out (and I haven't been posting on here for ages but I have dropped in occasionally to read) there is a lot of support amongst the community for members of the community, and basically that is what it is about. A community. Which R3 destroyed. A community which decamped here and has now been split asunder yet again. It's not for me to pass judgement, as I said I haven't posted for ages, but just as Antheil was the 'bad boy' of classical I too have been the 'bad girl' of the MBs, which I regret of course, but there are people within here who have forged strong ties and some of whom are heartbroken at what has happened. I can understand John Wright, that the political musico messages didn't interest him, they didn't interest a lot of people either, mention Marxism to me and I reach for the Sal Volatile, but if the owner/moderator dislikes such threads they should be locked at conception, not after the birth has occurred. (Mort, don't you ever answer your messages?)

Couldn't agree more, Mort! Waffle feeds into the more 'serious' discussions in a way that I find really positive. Glad to see it's happening over at M&S too.

Hmm, that looks suspiciously like a potato waffle to me. I always assumed waffle was of the sweet variety, possibly Belgian, with lots of strawberries and whipped cream. Or perhaps butter and maple syrup. Is this a symbol of all the distress these boards have undergone in the past few days? ps This is my first waffle! oh, I just realised this isn't the waffle thread. And I was so excited. Oh well.

a) the waffle thread was fun, we got to know one another AND we posted on serious threads too. We (I ) started the waffle thread when people complained that the talk on serious threads was becoming too lighthearted. .. No one was forced to even read the thread if they didn't want to.... but they did, and contributed in droves..... b) I don't think many of us found the political threads difficult to understand... uninteresting yes but we are all reasonably intelligent , and I think most of us chose not to join the silly political arguments that actually caused all this chaos... ..........NOT THE WAFFLE THREAD A
