Something that John W said elsewhere has prompted some thought in my noggin.
He said something about how posts here can be searched by Google, but as far as I can tell, this doesn't happen.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but am I right to think that someone would have to search this site specifically in order to find anything within it?

Hi h-h,

Well, our sister forum R2ok, for R2 listeners, started up about eight weeks ago so can it be Googled?

A search for 'R2ok' picks up all the associated sites including the forum link r2ok.s4.bizhat.com/index.php?mforum=r2ok but may not appear to penetrate into the forum

But if we search 'R2ok Wogan' then we get :

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLR,GGLR:2006-03,GGLR:en&q=r2ok+wogan

and you will find at least one search result takes us to the title of a thread posted by gfloyd.

Similarly, search 'R2ok Friday Night' and you will find a thread posted by ME just two weeks ago.

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLR,GGLR:2006-03,GGLR:en&q=r2ok+friday+night

And now, search for R3ok and you will already find the highly popular Waffle Thread as result 11:

http://www.google.com/search?q=r3ok&hl=en&rls=GGLR,GGLR:2006-03,GGLR:en&start=10&sa=N

To penetrate a message you seem to need the poster's name, for example picking a well known activist name, search 'R3ok Ian Pace' gets:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=GGLR%2CGGLR%3A2006-03%2CGGLR%3Aen&q=r3ok+ian+pace&btnG=Search

that has gone straight INTO a message.

and later it will pick up more recent postings

Thanks John for going into so much detail on that one!

It's certainly something to think about, but I'm still not sure that it's quite the clear and present danger that you highlighted.
You told Ian that he risked bringing this forum to the attention of people who we would rather not see, but surely (given the google searches that you've given us), to find any of these posts, you would first need the name of the forum (i.e. it wouldn't exactly be bringing the forum to their attention - they would already have to know of its existence). Could you give an example of a google search that doesn't involve "r3ok"?

Interested to see that the BBC boards came up on Google as well. I didn't think that happened either. Learn something new everyday you do.

If I search for me and r3ok I get this...  Grin

Just realised it's not going to be much of a problem any more though...  Cry

Hi h-h, I already replied to this but the posting got lost because Ollie was posting. That has happened before on here.

Anyway, what I think I said was that R3ok is too young for content to be found without referring to r3ok in the search. The Waffle thread has over 5000 views so one day it might be found but I don't expect so as Waffle Thread is likely on a lot of older forums.

Sorry to use Ian Pace as an example but that is relevant to the concern I had earlier today. Ian is well known for more than his music and a search of Ian brings up a lot of results and some are BBC pages, so trailing the BBC menus would bring up the messageboards where there are links to R3ok, where can be found Ian and the ballerina thread, so unwelcome visitors could find there way here already.

As this forum grows and postings get in 10's of thousands Google will find stuff more easily.

I post too much, don't I?  Embarrassed

Oh well. I'll be playing another away gig before very long so you can post unimpeded. Wink

I wouldn't say you post too much Ollie. It's the content that's important.  Wink and many of your postings have made me content.

Did you know that if you look at the member list you can list them in various orders including by number of posts?

Not surprising,  you are top Ollie !

I also notice about 1/3 of our members haven't posted yet  Roll Eyes
