So Andy Kershaw is 'Away' and we were treated to world music as heard through the ears of Lucy Duran.

Great programme!

I wasn't so taken with Odembe OK Jazz All Stars but their last number 'Pesa Position' was a corker.

Of the rest I really had 4 favourites:

i) Irini Konitopoulou
ii) Ed Young and Emma Ramsay
iii) Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba feat. Zoumana Tereta
iv) Tesfa-Maryam Kidane

Let's face it; Andy is a hard act to follow. But Lucy did really well and we got more developing world music than usual which is a bonus. I just got a feelgood factor from the whole programme really.

Sincerely,
whs

Just listening to the programme from 4th June.

I've never heard Lucy Duran before but although the music is OK, her style is just too different from AK's. I'm finding it almost impossible to listen to.

In fact, it's not really AK's programme at all - it's a World Music programme (some of which AK would play but there is nothing like the variety or eclecticness of AK).

Surely AK and Lucy Duran are not the only ones able to broadcast world music? Why don't R3 use any future AK absences to have guest presenters. There are a growing number of musicians who have a good knowledge of World Music and it might be interesting to hear from them.

Good point el groucho! Guest presenters could be fun! I got the impression that Andy sprung this on Radio 3 at short notice. Could be wrong. Members of my group say he always takes a holiday during the TT races.

Sincerely,

Would be interesting to hear Simon Broughton given a go. He is the editor of Songlines magazine ( where he puts up with AK's self indulgent column )  but also works as a freelance producer I believe.
