Excellent European Roots programme on BBC4. I had mistakenly imagined the Warsaw Village Band to be some kind of 100 mph klezmer ensemble but they were much more subtle and interesting than that. Loved the guttural vocal style of the dulcimer player which reminded me of the sound of the Pokrovsky ensemble. Very interesting to see the old instrument makers and folk performers too. Sadly, the European Roots series seems unique among BBC4 programmes in that it isn't repeated. All three programmes so far have been well worth watching.

Not the only programme not be be repeated by a long chalk, BZ. Indeed, I sometimes find myself wondering whether the likelihood of repeats isn't inversely proportional to the qualllity of the content....

I'm sorry I missed the programme.  I saw the group play, a couple of years ago, and although I'd already heard them on the radio, I was blown away by the power of the singers' sound qualities, especially in ensemble.  Also it's great to see the passion for their own traditional music, and not in a museum-piece preservationist way.

The final piece they played was long, with a very long trance-like buildup of the textures from dulcimer to cello, into incessant driving music.  At the end of it, I turned to my friend, and asked 'is it just me, or can you not remember the start of that piece either?'  They couldn't.  A very strange sensation.
