I'n sorry to hear that, A: I'm afraid my technical knowledge doesn't extend to ipods, so I can't help you on that. My major decade on the folk scene would have been the 80s rather than the 70s, btw.

I'm afraid I also know nothing about iPods or iTunes. I still buy my music on CDs (the old fashioned way  Grin ) -- in this case, from the merchandise stand after the concert!

(Side issue: wherever possible I buy a band's CD from their live concerts rather than a record store. I've seen figures for what percentage of a CD's cost goes to various points down the supply chain, and it must be really depressing for a band. If I buy at a gig, the musician gets a much larger percentage of my money. I realise this is a bit harsh on the record store employee (or owner) who relies on me to keep his job, but to be honest I'm much more interested in keeping a musician able continue producing music.)

Chris Wood and Hugh Lupton's Christmas pageant is repeated tonight on Late Junction, "a montage of speech, music and song". Worth catching again if I remember correctly from the original broadcast.

That's more or less true, I suppose - depends who's doing the concert sales. I've done my fair share of sales at concerts over the years, as well as working in most other sectors of the record industry (shop assistant manager, mail order, distribution company dogsbody ...) - sometimes the concert sales are done on behalf of the record company too.

On the other hand, the artists certainly aren't going to get less money that way than through shop sales, so yes, what you're doing does have a point.

Yes, I'm sure that gig merchandising across the industry is more complex than I stated. But I follow a number of "small" bands who don't have major record company backing but still get stung by punative distribution deals for their self-produced/small label releases. I imagine it must be the same for a lot of the minority-interest folk/world artists, and probably for small classical labels, too.

Thanks. I didn't see this in time but I'll be sure to "listen again" Smiley
