Not a bad start for the new Monday time slot.

Featured artists the Stairwell Sisters were on the whole excellent. If that's old timey I guess my whiskers are getting grey.

Voice of the night goes to Joe Thomas singing his song 'Lavender Coffin'. A humourous quote from Chopin's funeral march at the end.

Guitar hero of the night goes to Toumast; another great Tuareg band. They seem to be producing more than their fair share of fabulous music.

I really loved Ninjaman and Flourgon and their song 'Zig it up'. Is that ragamuffin?

Also appreciated the guitar work of R.L. Burnside.

I thought that Toumast outclassed Tinariwen. Does anyone else find the Tinariwen recorded sound very compressed and reigned in for something that might be expected to evoke the wide open spaces of the desert ( apologies for the cliche ) ?

Ry Cooder was good, don't miss the Radio 2 special celebrating his 60th birthday on Saturday.

See http://www.guardian.co.uk/leaders/story/0,,2016830,00.html to read the Guardian crawling to the BBC.

However the main interest is the sensible comment by TerryBall - scroll down to see it.

I have read the comments of Terry Ball and by and large I agree with him.

The loss of 'Mixing It' is distressing. I was never particularly a fan of the programme but I was glad it was there. To have a professional musician and a learned journalist talking about music on the radio should have been one of the highlights of the schedule. It provided a link with the more serious forms of popular music and it was a great way of explaining to the classical cogniscenti why some forms of popular music must be taken seriously.

Then the treatment of Andy Kershaw. I've said elsewhere that the old AK/ WR messageboard was an attraction for the trolls and a bit like a place where adults picked on poor defenseless children. But I blame the moderation team and the house rules. They were just so easy to get around for people intent on causing trouble. Speaking personally I had a lot of angst with the old board and sometimes I questioned whether it was all worth it. So we have taken a beating with the latest shake up, but now the challenge is to build things up from scratch again and I for one am willing to put in the time and effort to do this because I love Andy Kershaw and what he represents: something different and exciting. Which sensible and honest person couldn't love Andy's infectious enthusiasm. You might not agree with everything he says but it's a point of view which must be respected.

Finally it's true that AK and LJ have had awards showered upon them. It's very sad that such talented people can be treated in such a shabby way but I say that the gauntlet has been flung down, and somebody's got to pick it up and try to make the difference so that future generations will know that we tried to stand up for what is good and wholesome.

Terry Ball's comment in reply to the Guardian's editorial is the same as a comment posted by someone (noname?) on the recently disappeared R3 message boards; if I recall correctly, when it was posted on the R3 MB, it was accompanied by the contextual comment that it was the text of a complaint that, as at the time of posting, remained unanswered.

I agree with TB too: it seems to be a pretty poor show all round. I wonder if AK's reference at the top of last night's show to the new "excitingly convenient" slot was as much of a critical comment as he felt able to get past any senior editor that might have been sitting opposite?
