Listen Again was very poor sound quality today with all sorts of minor interuptions.

Lisa Knapp started off the show singing over the continuity announcer. But it was a beautiful version of the traditional song 'Lavender' sung unaccompanied. What a way to announce your presence on the Andy Kershaw Show.

Her session was pretty darn fine too with the best song being 'There U R' and very sophisticated it was.

There was the inevitable Tinariwen track but this one 'Ahimana' really worked for me.

Track of the night was UNDOUBTEDLY 'Highway 61 Revisited' by Bob Dylan. Take 6 sure was a hot one.

Lefty Frizzell pushed Dylan close with 'Always Late ( with your kisses )'. Andy is nothing if not bold, throwing down the gauntlet to 'Through the Night' listeners. Made me smile.

Guest in 2 weeks time Ba Cissoko was on good form with an inspired K'Naan accompanying. I really do like that dusty foot philosopher.

Both Sergent Garcia and C.J. Chenier were worth a mention.

Good show Andy.

Just a reminder that next Sunday Andy will be the guest on Desert Island Discs. In order to be fair, next Monday's programme will be devoted to many of the discs he should have played but couldn't due to lack of time.

Look forward to seeing you next week folks when we will have chance to pick over some of Andy's favourites.

Haven't caught up with this edition yet, looked at the playlist a couple of days ago and couldn't face another Tinariwen track. Really should check out the context of playing the BobbyZ take of Highway 61 though I guess.

Can I be controversial and say I like Tinariwen?  Wink

I've lost disc 1 of Weld, can't find it anywhere!

It's probably got tucked into a book, magazine or pile of papers, so it might turn up sometime. Having to listen to Rust Never Sleeps now instead - no great hardship!

PS haven't got to the end of Monday's prog yet.

Sorry to hear about the lost cd trauma. Nothing controversial about liking Tinariwen. I have the previous cd but feel no need to own more than one on the evidence of what I have heard of the new one ( well over half of it by now courtesy of AK and Songlines cover disks ) Of course it doesn't help not understanding the lyrics but musically the songs seem interchangeable to me. And the production seems a bit flat and the instrumentation could do with a few more colours than just guitar. I think maybe I'm over reacting against a concerted music industry push to "break" them in the wide market. Which opens the entire question about why shouldn't a "world" music act have substantial commercial success and why must they be kept in a niche ghetto. A long time conflict within pop / rock music concerning any cult or alternative act that crosses over.
