A very illuminating three quarters of an hour in the company of Andy Kershaw. He talked about his first ambitions to be a journalist and having visited 81 countries so far. Also about the time he was invited to be a Liberal Democrat MP around the time when Blair came to power in the Labour Party.

The artists selected were: Bhundu Boys, Bob Dylan, The Clash, Warren Zevon,  Loundon Wainwright III, Joni Mitchell, Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, and finally Tinariwen which Andy described as Roll 'n' Roll music.

Unfortunately this programme is not available on Listen Again but is repeated next Friday 9.00 - 9.45 am. Well worth a listen.

Hi whs,

I was online on a blog while the programme was on and wrote the following as the programme progressed:

"Listening now, first few discs v predicatable (Bhundus, Dylan, Clash) but got one on now which I don't know, don't even know how to spell the name!! Better google.

Ah it's Warren Zevon - know the name but don't know the music.

Loudon Wainwright now - One Man Guy - one of my faves too, I've posted the lyrics on the [Radio 4 MB] in the past. btw I do like music that AK doesn't and also dislike some of the stuff that he likes eg a lot of the American Country & Western, Southern Soul that he plays.

Ooooh a good word from AK about Woger Wrabbit - he did take AK on when Radio 1 ditched him after all. RW hasn't always been a complete idiot.

Joni Mitchell: Carey - hmm not one of my faves (couldn't spell Carey either!!)

What's next? Hmmm Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris, see above remark re C&W etc

His daughter is named "Dolly" after Dolly Parton!! Didn't know that. His son is Sonny/Sunny after Sunblest bread!

Last track: Tinariwen, whs has just bought their new album, I'm v tempted to get it too. One or two on MB who know their earlier work aren't quite so enthusiastic about the new album, but they're new to me - thanks to AK playing them.

He doesn't want the Bible or Shakespeare, good for him!

His luxury is a bog roll, needs to be able to wipe his bottom!!

What will be more interesting is tomorrow night's programme, all the music he didn't have room to include today - and tracks in full as well.

I've got Swedish radio's world music programme Klingan on now. Lennart Wretlind is more a Lucy Duran than an AK. His programme is on Sunday morning for an hour."

Andy D / whs

Can I put in a recommendation to catch Private Passions on listen again ? The writer William Dalrymple guesting, a very Late Junction-esque selection.

As for AK on DID, I was a little surprised by how mainstream a selection it was..Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Clash. Even the two African acts weren't exactly left field. But that was refreshing in a way, he didn't feel the need to be obscurist for the sake of any kind of street cred.

Had a listen to Private Passions and I thought it was quite interesting. It was nice to hear William Dalrymple talking about Sufism as being a moderating force in Islam. I am very interested in this mystic tradition.

My favourite selection came at the top of the programme with an excerpt from Victoria's Requiem.

My tastes in music diverge quite a lot from Andy Kershaw's as any visitor to the files section of my group's webpage will see. I am interested in the whole edifice of classical music and have an abiding love of swinging jazz. Mozart is the composer I turn to when I'm under stress but I love the whole tradition of American song and the way that jazz musicians can breathe new life into this primal material.

WHS, perhaps you've posted a link to your band's page somewhere before, but if not would you be willing to?

Hi Martle,

It's an Andy Kershaw fan group. Here's the address:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/andy_kershaw/

So far we have 5 members, but I would encourage anyone who has something constructive to say to join.

Sincerely,

Hmmm, you spoke too soon.  Although the topic remains, the first message has been removed, as has the most recent.  I despair; it's just pathetic.

Currently listening to the Friday morning repeat of 'DID'.  Very interesting.  It makes a change to hear someone who is genuinely interested in music on the show.
