This guy was a winner at Radio3 World Music awards or something. Fiona played a track on Tuesday (2nd item after about 6 mins of some very good stuff from Thomas Mapfumo) entitled 'Ere mela mela/ Metche new'. Just love it - low, urgent, dangerous stuff. I've found the album (Ethiopiques Vol 7) on Amazon. Sounds good.

Any other recommendations? There seem to be several volumes.

Gabby

If you go to the world music section of the Beeb's Radio 3 site and find Womad 2005, you can still listen to the Mahmoud Ahmed gig.

I don't know any recommendations for cd's, I think the Ethiopiques volumes are compilations covering various styles and periods. Eno's choices on the Songlines mag cover cd for March /April has a track from Ethiopiques Vol 4 which is an idiosyncratic sort of cocktail jazz that has a certain charm.

Further to the gig on the Radio 3 site, it isn't exactly signposted but seems to be one of those sites left fallow like old posts from the defunct message boards. It is definitely there to listen to though, simplest way to find it is to google Mahmoud Ahmed.

Yeah cheers Bobby - couldn't find it just by looking, but as you say, search.

Listened, and that was quite good fun! I shall try some of the other links. I shall have to do more research on MA.
