Pleased to say that my number of recordings of Birtwistle's Tragoedia has increased by infinity percent, thanks to the generosity of a Member. The disc arrived today and is now spinning.
I find the horn writing unforgettable and newsworthy. I also like that the title means 'goat-dance.'
You mean you don't have this? I didn't think I knew any composers who didn't have that disc. For shame, although the performances could be bettered by a conductor and ensemble with a higher average internal body temperature. Worth hearing, though.

Ive been off from work this week with Laryngitis(yuk!!), and so have had a useful time in playing some of my cds, which are numbering in the 1000 bracket now. Ive had Vernon Handley on Bantock; George Dyson Violin Concerto on Chandos; Brahms 2 & 3 with The Cleveland Orchestra/Szell; Moeran; VW; Finzi; Ravel etc. Been rather good week really, despite being ill.

Now you know another. I've heard it but didn't find it that interesting, Tragoedia being the only work on it that I particularly like, but not really in this performance.

Is there an implication lurking that there is another recording of Tragoedia out there somewhere in addition to that Ensemble Intercontemperain/Boulez one?

I only broke my sabbatical to thank the Member for his generosity, but as an addendum: the performers are Melos Ensemble, directed by Lawrence Foster; recorded 4/23-24/1967

Ooh, thank you both. Copy just snapped up without too much damage to the credit card. That'll make me a Two Tragoedia household, but sadly not a composer.

At the moment I have spinning is Leon Boellman's Suite Gothitque for organ, played by Peter Hurford. Great piece of music. Quite a dextrous toccata at the end!!

Not to mention the rather beautiful Leopardi Fragments. Hmmm... I think I might have to order that CD for myself as soon as possible.

And the recording of Ogden playing the 5 piano pieces which I believe tinners asked me about aeons ago on this thread and I forgot to tell him about...so now I have. I like the Leopardi fragments too.

There are still a couple of these dirt cheap (€5) at Saturn. I'd be pleased to pick them up for interested Members.

Meanwhile: http://www.sendspace.com/file/gbao5vI'm not sure I've recommended this to the assembled company before. It's rare indeed in today's sanitised musical world that one encounters vocal technique and interpretation of this calibre. Not to mention an innate gift for language. I can't recall recently hearing a performance where I've had quite such a strong feeling of a masterpiece receiving a performance it so richly deserves.
