Here's the latest temptation list. What about the Universal 5-disc sets for £11? What's on the Rachmaninov, for example? There's an unusual Lyrita disc of Sir Henry Wood orchestrations, including the Mussorgsky Pictures which he shelved when he heard that Ravel had embarked upon a similar enterprise, more than a smattering of Mahler, some Lizst and a big Busoni set for Jonathan, a three disc set for trombone ensemble which sounds right up bombo's alley, a Skempton NMC, and plenty more besides. I doubt that anyone (other than Mary Chambers maybe) will be able read the list without damage to their pockets! http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/search/New%20Releases/NR_August07/August07/

Thank you for that, Martin: that's a fine bit of sleuthing. Not all quite top drawer performances, perhaps, but a way of taking on Naxos at their own game.

The St Petersburg Chamber Choir's performance of the Vespers is very fine indeed.

I hope you've heard the Russian State Academic Choir under Sveshnikov, too, IGI!

No, I haven't - what label is it on? I do have the Savchuk/ National Academic Choir of Ukraine on Regis as well, which is a lovely disc. Korniev and the St Petersburg Choir rerecorded the Vespers for Pentatone a few years ago, but I think I prefer their Philips disc. Have you come across the Saint Petersburg Capella / Vladislav Chernushenko performance, which I believe is highly recommended? http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//RUS788050.htm

Yes, IGI, I know that Chernushenko well; after various Stravinsky and Shostakovich mega-duplications, the All-night Vespers is my most represented Russian work. The Sveshnikov is legendary and I spent years trying to track it down before Rachfan advised me that it was available in Russia; now I'm going to have to see if I can find his original message.
It's a reclusive disc, which has neither label name nor number (despite being an obviously professional production) which may explain why it's so difficult to find: presumably a nightmare for store databases. Mine arrived, beautifully wrapped in brown paper tied with string, from a private supplier; laser had hardly hit polycarbonate before I knew that everything that I'd heard over the past thirty years or so about the unique sonic and performance qualities of this particular recording were in no way exaggerated.

Ron, are the soloists on the Sveshnikov recording Klara Korkan and Konstantin Ognevoi? If so...it's available on iTunes!! I tried all the usual suspects and it's listed on Russiandvd.com (which I thought the best bet) but is out of stock, then, in a moment of pure folly, wondered if iTunes had it...and it does!

Following Cyrillic decryption, that's the one, IGI: oh, look, they're here in little western characters as well: yes, Klara Korkan and Ognevoi it is...
