My wife packed me off to bed this afternoon to help recovery from a gym injury (sustained last Wednesday!) I had R3 on quietly which got me to sleep but for some reason I awoke at the start of Discovering Music, after some Wagner sound effects I realised the programme was going to be about the sound world of Sibelius. The works
Swan of Tuonela and
Nightride and Sunrise are known to me but they are the kinds of music that I tend to hear in the car or in the dining room when I'm doing something else.
I found Stephen Johnson's talk very interesting, at last I took the time to listen to someone telling me how composers create 'sounds' , of shimmering strings, mysterious atmospheric effects, positioning of instruments for eerie effects, and the suggestion that the Sibelius sound may have been a political/nationalistic expression for Finland.
And I felt very comfortable and relaxed (nursing an aching shoulder) listening to Stephen Johnson (I can never feel relaxed when listening to Charles Hazlewood).
Not sure my shoulder feels any better now, but my mind does

and I feel like exploring Wagner now
