Thanks for that, Ron...haven't delved into the Christmas Radio Times yet. I saw the Carmen production at the ROH last December and it was a real treat, unlike ENO's recent effort. I shall look forward to watching it again, plus La fille, which I couldn't get to.

Worth noting, too, that "O Thou Transcendent: The Life of Ralph Vaughan Williams" has been rescheduled, on C5, for 09.00hrs (sic or sick)) on 1st January 2008. An ideal time for insomniacs, perhaps, but sheer purgatory for late risers like me; or those sleeping-off late night revelries. My earlier diary notes show a planned 12.00 hrs screening on the same date but I see that Cecil B DeMille's "Samson & Delilah" has now taken precedence - not many intended laughs in that!

Thanks for that info, Stanley, though at the moment Five reception still causes me problems - it's not free-to-air on satellite, and we don't get freeview well at all here, which is very strange considering the wonderful quality of our FM.

Yes, Ron, I take your point. My nephew, at Aberdeen, keeps complaining that he can't get C5, although I remind him that he isn't missing a great deal. I will be able to resolve the RVW documentary for you. Normally I would set the DVD recorder and put a modest faith in my proficiency to do so but, in this case, I will want to use the pause button to edit-out the commercial breaks. More in due course.

Thank you, Stanley. (Which reminds me to advise you to keep an eye on your letterbox: the shortest night might arrive by the shortest day....... and a cover for Hogmanay early )

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Forgot to mention that the British Symphonies cycle continues on Po3 this week with David Matthews, interspersed with music by composers who have had a particular influence on him.

Hi George Garnett, I have not seen you lately. Thank you for your post. I found it in time to tune in. I liked the two pieces very much.

Advance warning, particularly fror Mr Grew, for whom, if I remember correctly, the music of Cyril Scott holds a special fascination: Afternoon Performance next week includes all four of his symphonies and other works besides.

There's also the New Year's Day Concert from Vienna on BBC4 at 19:30, New Year's Day. If you like assorted Strausses (Strice?), of course

The serious pedant would surely write either Sträuße or Strauße. Depending whether it means bouquets or ostriches.

While checking out whether there was anything I wanted to save from Jazz on 3 tonight, I took the opportunity to also glance at the start of the TTN listing. I'm glad I did: 1.00am Sibelius: Andante Festivo Helsinki Grand Radio Concert Orchestra Jean Sibelius (conductor)
1.08am Sibelius: Symphony No 5 in E flat 1.38am Sibelius: Symphony No 6 in D minor 2.07am Sibelius: Symphony No 7 in C Danish National Symphony Orchestra/DR Thomas Dausgaard (conductor)

Simon Rattle on Desert Island Discs Jan 13th. Might be insufferable but should be at least interesting.
