Lord Byron, was that from two years ago? I saw her play that concerto on the BBC and completely fell in love with her... I mean, with the music! Yes, it's all about the music...

In the 2006 proms she played a Mozart concerto, which I wasn't wild about.

<quote>why is it that whenever I hear about an exciting young violinist these days, it's never a man? </quote>
I head this being discussed in a documentary about the Hannover Violin Competition last year (five of the six finalists were women). They had two theories:
1) There have *always* been exciting young female violinists, but in past decades social pressures would have left them sitting in one of the back desks of the orchestra even if they were as good or better as the male soloist at the front. So there are not a disproportionate number of young female violinists these days, there are in fact the in the *right* proportions for the first time.
2) A young female Asian violinists said, "My brother was much better than me but my family wouldn't let him pursue his musical career. It is more important for the son to go into a safe business." This might explain why all the young violinists coming from the far east are female. They don't have the social pressure to get a "proper job" and be the bread winner for the family.
