Been lumbered with a late shift and an early back-to-back (which isn't supposed to happen). About enough time to cook, eat, wash-up, do the ironing and turn in before up again in six hours' time. This is another favour which will cost someone dearly.... it's like being in Rep or ENO again, though nothing like as inspiring  Sad

If it's quiet tomorrow I'll be wandering through the smoking ruins of the other place, looking for the few hardy heroes still fighting for survival (can't access this site from work...) Goodnight, all!

Night Ron.
I've been attempting to start some discussion on new music over there under the shadow of a slightly flimsy pretext.
We'll have to see what survives the weekend...
I must go and do the washing up now.
If I keep on saying that I may actually do it.

Ho "A".  How are things "dahn sarf"?  Last night was pretty cold here, only just above freezing.  Today it's still cool and I suppose you'd call it "cloudy bright".  At the moment I have no rants apart from an enormously nasty one about the "other place".  I can't understand how your picture changes.  Do you put it into the Bucket before you post it?  Could it be that the original picture has been changed for another one using the same http...whatever ?  Hope you both have a good weekend.
Cheers

That is good. Lets leave it this way.
Hello, soundwave. Good to see you. It is sunny here, but cold.

I HAVE A RANT!

Part the first.

Got my course returns for one of the courses that I'm teaching and a few (about 5) students were complaining that my lectures are insufficiently focused on the final summative assessment... I'm going to remind them this coming Thursday that the assessment is designed to test how well they have learnt from my lectures, and that my lectures are not designed to prepare them for the summative assessment! Next, they'll be complaining that getting CDs out of the library is too much trouble for them and they want it all provided for them... erm well actually I did have one of those...

Part the second.

I run a gamelan performance group. It's worked out that we have about five people (which is the minimum really). We're doing a concert in the first three weeks of next term so we've got about 3 weeks worth of practice left... and I had one player turn up ten minutes before the end of the practice, and then another announced that she wasn't going to be here next week (last week of term) and looked slightly shifty when I started talking about last term! Argh! They complain that we aren't doing any concerts and then when we do they can't come to the rehearsal!
I remain very calm in the practice and then come back home to rant!

This is the way to do it, hh. Remain calm and rant at home, but don't take it too hard. People now are not very committed and they have too many things to do. If you take it too seriously you will burn.
One has to be adoptable now days and think how to make do with what you have. Since you are a composer there is a chance to change things and experiment with new instruments or something else. It might even be useful. Who is a mother of invention, I forgot?
Here we have strange combination of musicians that want to play together: piano, flute, bassoon and English horn. May be viola could be added to the list.
One must do with what one has.

As to preparation for assesment or exam I am watching this for more than 20 years. I am sure your students  are better than what my other half is teaching because the University is better. However, it is the best to give them questions and answers discreetly (if you can) to make them happy and have a good evaluation. Anyway who wants them for resit. May be you are not talking about exams.

Anyway, better make yourself happy and don't let them influence your state of mind. If one is in a good mood things are easier.

It sounds like if I really know how to deal with it, but I am not really. It is hard perhaps, but it doesnot matter.

H-H what are your students like? I remember when I was at that stage we were mostly apathetic which must have made it very difficult for our tutors looking back. With the benefit of hindsight I realize how important it is (and also how demanding) to fire a student's enthusiasm to learn.

Ho S'Wave, Kiss Kiss

All is well darn 'ere. Lovely day except that as soon as we decided to do some gardening it rained.. only for a short while but everything was soaked . We had a good day gardening last week.. lawn mown , some shrubs clipped and a path cleared, that was fun and it looks better already!

Hope all well with you.. I may well be at the TC this week.. would you like to meet up? I was looking at new clothes yesterday and the only dress ( yes a dress!) that I sort of half liked was £150 !!! not bloomin' likely!

I don't understand my problem with avatars, I also have been having trouble posting smileys but, it isn't really important is it?!!

Hope all well with you and Mrs S'Wave. My feller sends regards to you  Wink

Ho "A"+  You should get your fella to buy you that dress.  You deserve it, so spring into action.
I have a rant - as follows.
Cheers

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhh!!!

I used to admire Burnside in his old programme.  This morning he presided over a programme I had to switch off.  This ghastly women was wittering on about views from her window, an old lady who used to live in her village (here she broke into pantomime dialect) and general uninteresting twaddle.  She had one of those slightly smiley voices.   If a guest is needed, why not somebody who is highly regarded in the field of MUSIC.

I have to rant today. In the morning washing machine broke down. Why does it have to do that on Sunday when it is impossible to get it fixed. And tomorrow I am accompanying exams for half a day, advanced students.
I can not even stay home (Here they say even if they want to come that they don't know when they will come and you have to be home all day).
I can not buy a new machine because I have no time to go.
Anyway I am here with my half wet cloth and not knowing what to do.

And what does one do? To buy a new one or try to fix this one? No time to go to buy a new one because both of us have schedule that is crazy.
Grunt, grunt, rant, rant.

Oh dear t-p - you have my sympathy.  You'll have to hand-wash it all and hang it up somewhere to dry.  That's what I've done in the past.  Do  you have a garage where you could hang the big stuff?  Radiators? Spare room?

When I've been without a washer, I've used the bath for big items like bedding and towels, but unfortunately I'm not very strong with regard to wringing it out.  I suggest wrapping it round the taps and then pull hard.   That usually works.

My sympathy though!

Oh, thank you Millie so much. I don't know how to thank you enough.
I already put the washing in the tub. I don't have big items, only cloths.
I used to wash by hands in the USSR. But now I am so spoiled, it did not even cross my mind.

I will soak it for a while and then wash and put on radiators.

The sympathy helped too. I feel so much better.

Well I have a rant... why, why why does my avatar change without my knowledge to a picture I don't have ..... almost every day.

There, I have had a rant.

It annoys me  Angry Angry Angry

Sorry about washing machine t-p, it reminds me of student days, we washed towels in the bath, left them soaking and walked on them.... quite fun really but I guess I was a lot younger!!

Are you absolutely 100% sure about that bit, Milly? I know EXACTLY what would happen if I did that  Cheesy

I'm always starting off with small problems and end up demolishing the house. I speak with the experience of someone who once did a nice neat bit of tiling in the bathroom. Very pleased with myself I was. Rather lazily washed some of the grouting stuff down the hand-basin. Blocked the waste-pipe. Couldn't shift it by flushing it with hot water. Tried to clear it with (no, I've no idea why) paint stripper. Watched, transfixed to the spot, as this failed to work but instead the whole plastic waste-pipe sagged in slow motion and eventually burst showering the floor with grouting, virulent paint-stripper, several month's worth of daughters' hair, dirty water,....tears.
