Since visiting him involves 200 miles on a train, phoning him at four o'clock to arrange dinner might be a bit difficult.
I know. If it's any comfort I'm a bit hopeless at arranging to meet my mum, too, though we do speak on the phone several times a week. I tell her not to come and visit me in London because I never know what I'm doing - which is exactly the situation you describe, come to think of it, except that she's more or less realised now that it's not even worth trying to commit me to something. I was in Mexico on her birthday though and I've been promising to go up to Oldham and give her her presents since the end of July. It's now looking like I might as well wait until mine and my dad's birthdays in November and do it all in one go.

I tend to like to arrange things in advance, too, and it really bugs me when I organise something with a friend only to be ditched for a better offer a couple of days before the event. On the other hand, as I arrange SO much in advance, I must be the most infuriating person to get hold of when one of my friends wants to invite me to something at short notice

Are the presents so huge you can't post them?
I don't normally visit either of my sons much - they visit me from time to time. He wants to show off the new house.

Are the presents so huge you can't post them? No - a necklace from Mexico, but I don't really want to risk it getting lost in the post. Anyway, it's nicer to give presents in person, and I really did think I'd make it up there much sooner. If I'd known it was going to be this long then I probably would have posted them.

I remember thinking when all was fixed that happiness was definitely a working loo. For some reason that really reminds me of Judith Weir, Mary. (I can imagine her saying it!) Somehow the happy conjunction of a Weir and a loo made me smile...

I've got the blanket for my bed out of the cupboard. Why does it get so cold so quickly? I'm in a strangely good mood this evening broken by moments of despair which pass quickly . I might read some e e cummings and go to bed soon, or then again...

OK, I'm back after a pit-stop of green tea and a chocolate bar. I suppose I have enough friends who are either in the same boat as me, or are just single, so I can stop my whining.

Whine away, hh. I can't think of any particularly supportive words to help you but I do feel for you and hope that posting here relieves some of the frustration and despair. I like reading your posts - your good-nature and humour come across even when you're having a bad time. Of course I hope that you'll soon be feeling happier far more often. MJ

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Oh God! Another one of my friends has got engaged. They all seem to be either getting married or engaged or having babies or all three! I mean, congratulations and everything, but do you have to be so inconsiderate? I found myself in the midst of mass engagements during the year. Not personal acquaintances, but friends of family. All variously betrothed or up the poll. Made for fantastically interesting dinner conversation, night after night, as I'm sure you can imagine.

Thanks MJ. Very kind of you to say that. The truth is that I was hoping to be announcing my own engagement about now, which is why the timing is so unfortunate.

Why is it that builders/joiners always turn up when you're thinking about having lunch? Especially when they're working in the kitchen. And my ex's mother has sent me a message on Facebook asking me how I am. How do I answer that one?
