I won't be succumbing to the Christmas spirit TOO prematurely, but I have promised myself I will not be as disorganised as last year. As a result of various circumstances* I left it all to the last minute. Never again. OK, so the circumstances* in question are NOT going to happen this year. But as my mum seems to have invited herself round for Christmas Dinner** it will be doubly necessary to be ready in good time. However after this message I will try my best not to mention the C word until December! *Circumstances as follows: 20th November: did a full day's work then caught overnight train to Edinburgh. 21st November: Got call to say my grandma had died. Saw Der Rosenkavalier (in Edinburgh) and caught overnight train back to London 22nd November: packed up my life; collected the keys to my new flat; saw La voix humaine (Opera North/Sadler's Wells) 23rd November: moved house; saw Peter Grimes (Opera North/Sadler's Wells) 24th November: Had new bed and white goods delivered (previous place having been furnished); unpacked huge numbers of boxes; went to Andreas Scholl concert at the Barbican. 25th November: saw Death In Venice (Philharmonia/QEH). 26th November: 27th/28th November: Went to work; on evening of 28th took train to Durham to stay with my mother prior to Grandma's funeral 29th November: Grandma's funeral in rural Northumberland, spent a second night at Mum's 30th November: Caught train from Durham to London King's Cross and transferred to Paddington in order to catch a train to Cardiff. Over the course of that and the three subsequent evenings, saw the Gergiev/Mariinsky Ring Cycle. 4th December: Returned from Cardiff by train; went home 5th December: had living room suite and flatpack wardrobe delivered; went to work. Next three weeks: lived in complete chaos as I realised I didn't have enough shelves and cupboards and therefore couldn't really unpack.
**Christmas Dinner chez Ruth is a bit tricky as I don't get home from church till 1pm

My word Ruth, that's a lot of travelling, concerts and upsets in a short period of time. I recommend you take it much more easily this year!

The aisles at Tesco have also all been messed up to accommodate Christmas stock, so that it's impossible to find anything useful that you may actually want to buy.
But today's BIG rant for me is - I collected my new spectacles this morning, at huge expense as usual, and they are NOT RIGHT. Not as good as my old ones in fact. This has never happened before, and I've been wearing glasses for years and years. I phoned them, and they will check the prescription and change them if necessary, but it is all a big hassle going back and forth (quite a distance), and I really like the frames so I hope they can put it all right, but I'm hopping mad all the same.
I have a terrible suspicion I'm turning into a Grumpy Old Woman.

Jonathan - the REALLY ANNOYING thing was that I had kept my diary all but clear for two whole months preceding the marathon fortnight described above. Because I knew I would be moving house and I expected this to take place in September...
...or October...
...or early November perhaps...
but NO.

The trip to the optician did give me a chance to look at the queue outside Northern Rock, though, and that was mildly amusing.

hh, You're not one of our Northern t-short friends then? Not quite brass monkeys down here, but they might just go bald. Nevertheless, worthy of a Grump. My garden doesn't know where summer went. I'm thinking of employing Gussett of the Yard to investigate. Tommo

Tomsky, that's a fairly dubious proposition if my memory of the Snorebens episode of the Ollie/ Noel affair serves me right.

So he's not up the mark, eh, Mart? Well, then we could grump about his performance.
[Careful how you say that, vicar!]
