Getting settled in Edinburgh will probably make a big difference. Budgeting is going to be interesting for a while, but I'm sure that it'll work out.

HH, That's a good start, having a positive mental attitude. Edinburgh is a lovely place and it does have a decent classical CD shop as well (not that I can remember where it is - it's been years since I was last there) The Museum is interesting too.
I hope it all does work out ok soon!

hh,
You'll have to decide for yourself whether having Ron rather closer to your doorstep will be a boon or a disadvantage, but, allowing for that personal proviso, Edinburgh normally comes near to the top or top itself in the 'best places in the UK to live' surveys: it has a thriving cultural scene and a stunning location, it's surrounded by wonderful country and there are excellent links to the rest of the UK and Europe. Had not Castle Dough fallen into my lap (as it were) there's no doubt that Edinburgh would be my location of choice.

If someone from south of the border is permitted to second that, I will. Edinburgh is my favourite major UK city by a long chalk. An endlessly fascinating and richly contradictory place. Very envious of you living and working there, hh. Enjoy!

GG,
Indeed, seconding from the South only validates the information further, I'm sure.
Thank you.

And I tried to change mine yesterday and photobucket (careful no spoonerisms there) threw a wobbly.
So, pictureless until I can find a nice gif on the web somewhere

Just for the "mildly annoying room"
My student Travelcard expired on Sunday. I applied for a new one back at the start of September. Then on the 18th I got an email from Transport for London telling me that the application had been passed to my "educational establishment" ("It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen…") for validation. They did that with surprising efficiency. But it still has not arrived. I needed to get it yesterday at the latest to be able to buy an annual ticket - the card will expire on September 30th 2008...

It's a reference to Terry Pratchett! Another Pratchett fan, KB! Just been in the pub, typing may be a little out of kilter...

'the best thing in the newspapers are the adverts' - benjamin franklin
Grumpy pedantic rant coming up, with which someone is bound to disagree... It should be: "The best thing in the newspapers IS the adverts", "is" agreeing with "thing", the sense going from left to right. By the same logic, it is grammatically correct to say: "Adverts ARE the best thing in the newspapers". Then again, I suppose it should be "advertisements".
