`Best of all - we're going to have a Tax DECREASE of 2p in the £`
Be still my beating heart. Oh, joy unfettered fills my soul.
Someone pass the bloody wine. And the AK-47. Growl.
Hey - what's going on here Mort? How the hell did you know that my present Tax Code is none other than "AK-47". Baz

He`s probably stockpiled it all for his personal use, leaving the electorate the choice between Babycham (bleegghhh) and alcopops.

No I BLOODY DID NOT VOTE FOR THIS LOT Baziron! Even worse i voted libdemons; i have never voted for a winning candidate in any election ever, so proportional representation has an appeal. Actually i left the labour party in 1964 and gave up trades union activity in 75 and joined the social democrats when they were founded. Now i do not give a tickety boo for any of them and despise the psychopath mentality of politicians and activists. i am deeply alienated by modern society and am still teetotal. But i am hopelessly addicted to smokes and black coffee, so my blood pressure is way up there most of the time. i look forward to the day when i retire and like Louis armstrong, start smoking dope and indulge in the odd strong purge.

Calum,
Perhaps you could get in a little practice before than? Just to get yourself accquainted, of course. Carpe diem, gather ye rosebuds etc? Hell, what`s to lose? Unless you`re planning on taking up golf .....?

Mort The end, then, is obviously nigh. Goodbye, all, goodbye... Bang! What was that? Oh, probably just Uncle Vanya shooting himself. Again.

Tommo, I've been looking at this repeatedly this afternoon: International Longevity Centre UK and Actuarial Profession Joint Seminar - Promoting Inertia - How Should The Government Sell Personal Accounts.
and I've come to the conclusion that it's in a language I don't understand, albeit cunningly disguised as English... I hope it was, er, interesting. Richard (and Mort, and anyone else who thought English had gone on a trip to the Sanitorium and stumbled across a party with mind-bending drugs on the way) I am so glad I know some people who find this as bizarre as I do. <phewemoticon> It was two-and-a-half-hours long. Tommo And now the small print to try and explain it, for anyone that is interested.... 1. WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE - but not quite as soon as we had imagined. 2. That means we're all going to spend longer in retirement 3. If nothing else changes, that means the government has to pay out state pensions for longer 4. And that would make the country broke 5. Instead, there are a few things the Government can (and will) do. a. make us work longer (to 68?) b. pay us less in retirement (don't increase the Basic State Pension with the cost of living) c. put up taxes (eh, why break the habit of a lifetime...?) d. make us save more 6. On the last of these, you'll be 'encouraged' to save more from 2012. If you work for an employer, are over 22 and earn at least £5000, then you will automaticaly be enrolled into your company pensions scheme (if it is good enough) or into a new government run pension scheme (called Personal Accounts). There are lot of details on this still to be sorted out (such as who exactly be automatically enrolled, and what constitutes 'good enough'). Self-employed people may also join, if they wish. 7. If you are enrolled, you will pay 4% of your earnings towads your own pension, your employer will pay at least 3% and the govenment will pay 1% more. You may opt out. 8. 'Promoting Inertia' is a nod towards the idea that people should be encouraged to do nothing - it is good for them and their futures if they set aside money for their future - even if it feels like 4% of their pay is missing each month. (With taxes and things, it will probably feel like more than 4% of take-home pay) 9. There are a lot of issues to sort out. Lots of clever people from lots of professions are trying to work out how people will behave when they are opted in, and what is the best way of getting people to save more for retirement, rather than just fritter everything away...... 10. ..expect a political hot potato and a huge mess, unless someone in government takes a firm stand.
