To be honest, Ruth, it wasn't a concert I was desperate to see: the friends I was going to stay with had already booked, and as that was the time I was due to arrive, it seemed like a good place to meet up: I didn't mind missing the Britten Simple Symphony at all, and since the second item was by a composer I can take or leave, it wasn't the biggest disappointment.

Our central heating boiler at work packed up just as we were leaving yesterday. Consequently we have had no heat, - after one of the coldest nights and thickest frosts - the Gas Service people couldn't guarantee they would be here today so by half twelve, having sat there shivering and slowly losing the feeling in my fingers (I get Reynaud's Syndrome when I get really cold which is incredibly painful) I called it a day and walked out and said I would take it as a half days holiday - there was nothing urgent that couldn't wait for tomorrow. So I am at home, still a block of ice but slowly thawing out.

Blooming Asthma again!! I am well fed up with this at the moment. I have now used up all my sick pay and will have to pay back in due course, if I dont want to loose any money!! I could quite honestly shout out loud with a few explitives along the way!! But I will sit back and listen to some cds, which I am doing at the moment. At the time of writing I have Vernon Handley's recording of VWs Tallis Fantasia, Five Variants on 'Dives and Lazarus' and Job.

There must be a minimum temperature in the workplace below which you should not be required to stay, if you see what I mean. Hope you've warmed up now. Here, toast your frozen digits but careful you don't get chilblains:

Oodles of sympathy bbm. Hope you feel better soon. These shouldn't trigger an attack - they're pollen-free:

I could leave because all my men are out all day so I left my Arch-Rival (Little Miss Talons) who is front of house to shiver it out until 5pm (turning blue she was when I left!)

Health problems are such a thorough nuisance, coming along and trying to spoil lives. I once had a boyfriend with asthma, so I know what a nasty thing it can be. Lots and lots of sympathy. (Incidentally, a different sort of problem - when I saw Vernon Handley conduct last week, Bax/Britten/RVW, he was walking on two sticks and looked frailer than ever. He sat down to conduct, and was wonderful. He's had all sorts of health trouble for as long as I can remember.)

Aren't the sticks a result of the terrible car crash he was involved in a couple of years back, Mary?

brassmaster, Hope you are getting better fast. I have many students with asthma. Life in the city makes it worse. People tell me that asthma clrears fast if you go to the countryside with good air.

Ah, yes, I think you're right - but he did have problems even before that. I can remember him conducting concerts looking so ill you wondered how he got through it at all - but he always did. Brave man.

While we're on the subject, why is he sometimes called Todd? I have wondered.

Never known why he is called Todd. I shared a taxi with him once Lovely bloke, no airs or pretences. In fact, me rescued me, a damsel in distress, stuck at a station with no transport!

He's been called Tod since he was very young. He said it was something to do with the way he walked, I think - toddle?
