Well, we're coming in October Jan!! Where you live then Antheil?
BBM, I live in the Land of Romance, the land that gave you the Mabinogion and Dylan Thomas, Owain Glyndwr, Hywel Dda, the Tudor British Monarchy, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bryn Terfel, Karl Jenkins, Richard Burton, Tom Jones and Katherine Jenkins. Not to mention the National Health Service via Aneurin Beaven and of course Lloyd-George and Rugby. Charlotte Church and Shirley Bassey. Does that give you a clue?

Ah Antheil, yes well!!! No wonder!!
BBM, No wonder! As Cerys Matthews sings "Everyday I wake up, I thank the Lord I am Welsh" Whether we are, metaphorically speaking, huddled in Tom Sion Cati's cave, sheltering from the elements or being plucked as infants from Cader Idris by a giant rook, or dressing up as Druids, it is our imagination that can block out the sodden landscape. Of course, a lot of people think the Welsh are slightly eccentric but agree Wales is very wet

I was there for a month. I suppplicated at the misty and moisty grave of Talliesin just two days ago. I love Shirley Bassey. Does this make me properly Welsh now, yeah?

My maternal grandma was from Betys-y-Coed. In her latter years she lived in Llanfair Dcruthin. Before she died she requested that her ashes be scattered at the foot of Mount Snowdon. I love North Wales. I've never been South.

Marty, Marty, Marty <swoon, thud> This is the first time that Talliesin has been mentioned on this MB. A Gold Star for You! Although we usually spell it with a single 'l' Shirley Bassey (or Burley Chassis as we do refer to her) is cool. I thought she was great at Glastonbury. Yes, Martle, wear your leek with pride!! Now we just have to teach you the rules of Rugby!

You missed out the Welsh National Opera and Elin Manahan Thomas.

And Aled Jones . I had a Welsh aunt by marriage. She married my father's brother. She came from Cemaes Bay on Anglesey, and was very, very Welsh, and a marvellous cook in a traditional way (fabulous cakes). My cousin, as a small child, was never quite sure what language she was speaking. I have to watch Outnumbered on BBC4 now - very funny, but probably only if you've had children.

(fabulous cakes). Like what, Mary? I've been searching for the perfect Bara Brith for a whole month. It all tastes like stale fruit cake which I automatically associate with autumn Sunday evenings in front of some dismal BBC 'Classic Serial', too much heating in the room, the prospect of a) cheese on toast for tea later (on account of an overcooked roast at lunchtime) and b) school the next day. Would it be too precious of me to suggest that the word "mental" be changed for something else? (edit: that is a serious question for the moderation team by the way!)
I'd second that.

Here's a question you don't see often:
Are parents stupider than non-parents? I must say, since my son's birth I have noticed that I am a lot less articulate, less able to concentrate, and less able to follow through on complex tasks. My wife also says my reaction times are slower and I more frequently ask her to repeat herself. My composing has not changed significantly, my teaching -- hard to tell just yet. My piano playing is worse than abysmal now, even though that's my first instrument.
I have brought this up before on these boards, but only half-joking. Now I am half-serious, though. Have there been studies?

Parents are not more stupid at all. They just suddenly have, at a conservative estimate, 10,000 more things to think about daily and of course new parents have had their emotions hit head-on with a sledge hammer. All this scatters the concentration nearly into oblivion until you get used to it all. Of course, some of us never get used to it and their concentration has vanished into the mists of past times to those halcyon days when one could lead a lovely, selfish life with nothing and no-one to think about except oneself. I wouldn't have things any other way and nor would most parents I truly believe. You'll have to accustom yourself, however, to the fact that life will never be the same, you will never be the same, nor the rest of your family and from now on you will be planning ahead for what will feel like twenty people, when in fact it is the one small human being - for now anyway.
