Afternoon all. Hope you're feeling better A, and also that Mort's tummy isn't being difficult any more. I'm definitely grumpy today. Not sleeping very well at all and steadily feeling more and more like everything is some huge conspiracy against my ever getting moved and settling down. To top it all, an e-mail just came round announcing temporary promotions to cover sick leave etc, which don't seem to ever have any bearing on ability whatsoever. I've just typed an incredibly vitriolic rant in a Word doc to make myself feel better. It didn't work. Grump.

To be honest Rube, just the same but no worse!! I thought I may phone the doc again as I have heard nothing but remembered that they have a 2 hour lunch 'hour ' at this time so I had better wait... then they will be busy with school kids and won't answer the phone and then.... gasp.... gasp !! Hope you feel better soon too Ruby, and Mort... oh dear , what a lot we are ! A

The world is out of joint indeed, when the chefs turn Divarish and the divas (presumably) are all Chefrish!

Oh dear. Hope she feels better soon then! It's horrible when you're in such a mood and you really can't do anything about it. I've just been out for a bit of a walk and phoned the other half - feeling a tad better.

I'm thinking about going to the doctor's tomorrow but the idea of trying to get through to them is putting me off. The NHS must have saved millions by making it almost impossible to make an appointment... The phone line for ours is open between 8am and 8.30am, during which it is permanently engaged except for 0.3 of a second at 8.29, then open again between 2.30pm and 2.33pm. Except that they wait for a couple of minutes before taking the answerphone off and then switch it on a bit early just in case. (That may have been a slight exaggeration.)

I sympathise, indeed empathise, with anyone who cannot get through to their GP on the phone. I have spent countless hours trying to do just that on various occasions.
Some phone providers have a ring-back system so that if the number is constantly engaged it will keep trying the number for you and call you back when it's connecting - often with an extended bring-bring to let you know; then you pick up the handset and you're nearly there. A useful tool, though not foolproof.
Our previous GPs had a Duty Doctor on phone duty. So when you get through to the receptionist, you avoid asking for an appointment, but launch straight in with a request to speak to the duty doctor. This proved much more successful, and I would always get called back in a reasonable time frame. that way it's the duty doctor who decides whether you need to come in, and usually he offerred you an appointment time then and there - or, say, within the hour, in an 'urgent' slot.
I think it's probably better to ask to speak to a doctor because you need some urgent advice, rather than simply request an appointment. You bypass the monkey and get straight to the organ grinder that way.

So far we've only had to ring our GP once, my wife rang at about 8:20am and was offered an appointment at 9:00am (the same day). If they can keep that up, I'll be mightily impressed.

Hmm...perhaps not the best figure of speech to describe a doctor!

Good idea, Martin. I've pretty much given up trying to get an appointment with my GP. If I need to see a doc pronto I go straight for the Duty Doctor approach. As for getting through, I keep re-dialling within a nano-second of getting the engaged tone. Yes, it's a pain but it usually works. Give it a whirl A.

Thanks Ruby Yes, Feeling much more like the real Mort now. I'm going to ask Father Christmas for a new stomach. Do you think he might deliver ahead of time, if I offer to put two glasses of sherry out?

Isn't that a bit like accepting Simon Grey as an organ donor for a lung transplant, Mort?
