I'm slightly cheered about daughter-in-law not wanting to know the sex of the baby, because other visiting son has just told me that someone at work has just had a boy......after being told she was having a girl!!!
I'm given to believe that there are worse circumstances under which that can happen, Mary...

My CD drive in my (reasonably new) Mac has started misbehaving of late. Really very tedious. Originally I thought it was having problems with individual tracks on older CDs but it's been having problems with every CD I've been putting in there. Time to make some lunch and beat a retreat.

My sister's boyfriend is called Theo, but he's half greek, and I think it's actually short for something rather more complicated.
Theotokomplikated perhaps?

Coincidentally I had a similar problem last night, with specifically data CDs. All my back-up CDs seem to be steadily corrupting - last night it took me over an hour to get most of the pictures off a CD onto my external hard drive, but I've still lost a few. Sympathies hh. My rant for this morning is with travel booking companies, specifically our work one. They're mostly fine as long as you communicate in an entirely standard way through forms. As soon as you go slightly off-piste and actually try to correspond with them as sentient beings they go all to pieces. To make it doubly irritating, every email you send is greeted with an automated message that might as well say: Thank you for your communication. It has been read and misunderstood and we will be doing something random with your booking shortly. I'd hire a car and borrow a tent now if I were you to be on the safe side.

Hh, as a first port of call, have you verified your disc permissions?
Applications>Utilities>Disc Utilities: select your Hard Drive from the list at the left: make sure the 'First Aid' radio button on the line at the top of the big panel is clicked and showing blue, then click 'Repair Disc Permissions' (bottom left, same panel); your Mac will then just check that all its software is properly aligned, and reconfigure anything that's gone slightly awry. It's a wee wrinkle which is worth performing fairly regularly to keep the machine working at its best, and while it doesn't solve everything that can go wrong, seems to be pretty successful at sort most of it.
It's possible that the laser's failing on the drive, of course, but that's a failure under the terms of the guarantee, and as such should be easily fixed without the need to reconfigure anything else.

Not exactly a rant but i am rather disappointed to find R3 are broadcasting bits from the Pianothons at odd intervals during the day. The chances of me hearing my own performance are therefore neglible. I wondered if they might let me know when its being played (if it is)...

The burner drive on my desktop started to fail weeks ago (as reported elsewhere here) and I still haven't got round to replacing it. Having a laptop means I've just been using that when I need to burn audio CDs and nearly all of my data backups go onto external HDs not CDs/DVDs. Must order a replacement though.

That does sound annoying Jonathan. (I typed Jonathon first - getting mixed up with pianothon... what would a Jon-athon involve? Lots of Jons I suppose.) If you find out you must let us all know.

Woe unto her who relies on a dialup connection and a free download manager (and doesn't regularly back up her files because lame pathetic Vista won't resize the backup partition), for she shall find that the stupid FDM has decided that it can't restart the download which has already taken a month to get to 60% and overwritten the file starting at ... 0%.
If I hadn't recently paid a dentist a lot of money to tell me to stop grinding my teeth I would be ... oh, what's the use!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR writ large.
And may Bill Gates spend eternity in a room with lots of Windows and a beautiful Vista.

Hasn't fixed it. I'll try this CD in my audio player and see if it has issues but otherwise it looks like it's a visit to the Apple hospital on the cards... [edit]Actually, I tell a lie. It seems much improved. We'll have to see if it's a mere flash in the pan or something more significant.[/edit]
